Description

Letter from Vincent de Paul to the nuncio to France, Nicolò Guidi di Bagno. In the letter, Vincent de Paul says he is surprised but very grateful for the honor paid to his congregation, by the fact that PF cardinals have asked him to offer one of the members of CM to such an important task, the mission to Lebanon; Vincent de Paul proposes Thomas Bérthe, and it is noted that some of the cardinals already know him, because he was superior of CM house in Rome (1653-5). A modern note on f. 241v, dated "14 December '90" states that the original letter was given to the prince of Torlonia.
Additional comments
According to Coste, the original was given to the prince of Torlonia on 15 December 1890 by PF secretary. The copy is now held at the house of the Filles de la Charité, who run the Conservatorio Torlonia in Rome. P. Coste, ed., Saint Vincent de Paul: correspondance, entretiens, documents (Paris: 1920-25), vol. 6, doc. 2097. From a letter from Vincent de Paul to Edme Jolly (Coste, vol. 6, doc. 2099) it is apparent that PF asked for a candidate for a mission to Lebanon. The proposal never materialized in a CM mission. The letter says "Di San Lazaro." Saint Lazare was the most important CM house, located in Paris.
