PF minutes, 1657-11-12, Rome

Subject

Scotland
Petitions for faculties
Non-Catholic Christians

Description

Minutes of PF general meeting of 12 November 1657 discussing among other issues, the request by the prefect of the Scottish mission, William Ballantyne, that he be given the faculty to consecrate chalices and altar stones. This is an urgent request, due to the edicts enacted by Cromwell against Catholics, which prevent the priests from bringing them from outside the country, or to transport them from place to place; for this reason, the faculties that are usually given to missionaries who go to the Indies would be appropriate. Ballantyne adds that the regulars consecrate chalices and altar stones pretending to have the faculties to do so. There is no rescript.
