Description

Letter from Francis White to PF. He writes to have received 25 scudi from William Lesley, sent to him by PF. He has served in the mission for 14 years (orginally sent by CM), and in this period at least 14 parishes have been converted to Catholicism; White notes that if he had had any companions, all parishes would have been converted. He describes the opposition of the Protestant ministers, the need for other priests (especially for his brother John White), the fact that he can only go to confession once a year (despite needing to say mass every day), the poverty in the mountains, and the difficult circumstances under which he has to live. The letter is dated 27 June 1665.
Date discussed, 1665-11-09
