Letter from Alexander Winster and Thomas Lumsden to the PF secretary, Mario Alberizzi, 1661-09-10, Aberdeen
Scotland
Letter from Alexander Winster and Thomas Lumsden to Mario Alberizzi, PF secretary. Winster and Lumsden report the death (2 September 1661 ) of the prefect of the mission, William Ballantyne, and note the great esteem in which he was held by both Catholics and others. They also report about the need of Irish missionaries for the Highlands and the Hebrides, and the possibility to send Francis White and his companions, as they have served that mission in the past. Attached to this letter is a report by William Lesley, the procurator of the Scottish mission in Rome. He lists the (secular) missionaries present in Scotland and their qualities. Their names are: Giouanni Valchero [John Walker], Thomas Lumsden, Alexander Winster, Alessandro Leto [Alexander Leith], and Giliberto Graio [Gilbert Gray]. This list is dated 4 June 1662. The letter from Winster and Lumsden is signed and dated 10 September 1661. The letter was discussed on 12 June 1662. After weighing all candidates, the cardinals decide to appoint Winster to the task of prefect.

Letter from William Ballantyne to the nuncio to France [Celio Piccolomini], 1661-07-11, Aberdeen
Scotland
Letter from William Ballantyne to the nuncio to France, Celio Piccolomini. He tells about the need for money and missionaries, in order to not let the missionary work in the Highlands and the Hebrides be completed in vain. He proposes Francis White and his brother [John White], Jo’ Borgo [John Borough?], Maksuini [John MacSwiney?], and Carlo Horano [Charles Horan?] as missionaries. Ballantyne also asks for a house in which sick or old missionaries can retire, and for more discipline in the Scottish Colleges so that in the future there will be new missionaries for this mission. The letter signed and dated 11 July 1661.

Other secular missionaries
Copy of a letter from William Ballantyne to the nuncio to France, Celio Piccolomini. Ballantyne writes about the laws recently issued by the Scottish Parliament against Catholics, and about the need of provisions and priests for the Highlands. The French congregation who first supported four Irish priests in this region has ceased to do so for unknown reasons. There are already four candidates: Carlo Horan [Charles Horan?], Francis White and his brother [John White], Giouanni Borgo [John Borough?] and Giouanni Maksuini [John MacSwiney?]. The letter is dated 18 February 1661, and the nuncio probably forwarded the letter to Rome on the 29 April. The letter was read during the PF meeting on 9 May 1661.

Letter from David Burnet to [the PF secretary, Federico Baldeschi], 1672-06-21, Aberdeen
Scotland
Letter from David Burnet to PF secretary. Since the Apostolic See and PF spread the Catholic truth, they are completely dependent upon them. It is hard to respond to their messages from such a great distance. From the attached letters PF can understand the current state of the mission. The letters wil be brought to PF by the Scottish College in Paris.

Scottish Catholics abroad
Letter from David Burnet to PF. John Walker was the prefect of the mission but he suffered from a stroke. He remained prefect for two more years. But in May 1671 he went to London, as he hoped that the doctors there could help him. During his absence he made David Burnet prefect. Eventually Walker decided to go to France, and eventually to Padua. Alexander Winster works in the province of Aberdeen and Bamfia[?], and one year ago he travelled to Angus and Moray[?]. Fran' Le Blanc [Francis White], Fran' Macdonald [Francis MacDonell] and Rob' Monro [Robert Monro] work in the mountains of Scotland. Alexander Irvin works in the neighbourhood of Edinburgh. Gilbert Gray is useless for the mission and Burnet asks PF to recall him. Alexander Burnet came a year ago from the Scottish College in Rome without faculties, and he has been doing nothing ever since.
