An account of the resource
Petition on behalf of the Scottish missionaries asking for the reconfirmation of the missionary faculties of the following missionaries, which will expire in 1660: Gulielmo Bannatino [William Ballantyne], Giouanni Valchero [John Walker], Giouanni Smitteo [John Smith], and Tomaso Lumisdeno [Thomas Lumsden]. They also ask for the provisions which should accompany the faculties. The petition was discussed at PF meeting on 30 June 1659, but the notes showing the decision on f. 85v are illegible. The petition is unsigned and undated.

An account of the resource
Copy of a part of a letter from Francis White to the prefect of the Scottish mission, Alexander Winster. The missionary writes that he is exhausted from the work he has to do. White states that it was hard even when there were still four other priests to help him, but now it is almost impossible. Especially because he converted so many, and the number of people inclined to receive instruction, and the sacraments is increasing every day. Against his wishes, he gave up conversions because he can hardly assist those he already converted every two years. He is in great need of help from "the many friends in Rome" and asks the prefect to help. The copy is dated 13 March 1664.

Description
An account of the resource
Petition on behalf of the Scottish missionaries to PF including the following issues: a) the need of funding of a house where missionaries of the Scottish mission can retire; b) a list of the remaining missionaries (which are said to be too few) include: prefect Alessandro Vinstero [Alexander Winster], Giovanni Valchero, [John Walker], Gilberto Graio [Gilbert Gray], Bianchi [Francis White] and schoolteacher [Alexander Macalister]. Tomasso Lumisdeno [Thomas Lumsden] has already left the mission, and so has Alessandro Leso [Alexander Leith], both because they saw no hope that this house would ever be established. The petition also states that students in the Scottish colleges are unwilling to come the Scottish mission for the same reason. In response, the procurator proposes others for the mission, namely Giouanni Iruino [John Irvine], "signor Blaccallo" [Blackall?], Guglielmo Graio [William Gray] and Alessandro Andersono [Alexander Anderson], and asks for missionary faculties for them. Moreover, he asks for funding for a book by John Walker about Puritanism and for the printing of a work on Church history in English. The petition is unsigned and undated. PF notes on 76r are hardly legible but the ACTA file containing the decisions made during PF meeting of 23 March 1665 indicate the following: a) on the matter of Walker's book, Father "Thomas Cortenerus" should be consulted again; b) for the retirement house, Cardinal Antonio should verify the details of the request and communicate the findings to PF.
Date discussed 1665-03-23
Additional comments
According to a note on f. 75v, these questions were presented to PF during the meeting of 15 February 1665, and discussed on 23 March 1665. The creator of this petition is probably the procurator of the Scottish misison, William Lesley, since he is mentioned in the petition as making several requests. Moreover, the format of this text is similar to other letters coming from Lesley.

An account of the resource
Letter from Alexander Macalister, schoolteacher in Scotland, to William Lesley, procurator of the Scottish mission in Rome. He writes that he has 24 pupils at the house of count MacDonnell in Glengarry. The students are from the following families: "Macdonaldi, Cameroni, Mackmartini, Fraserij, Scotti, Stuardi, Makiuerij" [MacDonnell, Cameron, MacMartin, Fraser, Scott, Stuart and MacIver]; all but one have converted to Catholicism. Macalister adds that he is in great need of books. Winster has promised to have the necessary books sent from London, but Macalister is afraid that they will be seized. Its noted that some children have had to learn how to read from ‘heretic’ books. Macalister first taught on the Isle of Skye, but when the ministers noticed that he was Catholic and was converting his students, they banned him from the island. He never received any money from anyone, until he received 60 scudi from the prefect [Alexander] Winster, sent by PF. The letter dated 14 June 1665.

Copy of a letter from John Walker to the procurator of the Scottish mission in Rome, William Lesley. He writes to have received a letter from the procurator. With this letter Walker wants to underline a few points made in his letter to PF so that Lesley can clarify these for PF. He has left this letter for PF open, so that Lesley can first read it himself. The most important issues are: a) the enormous need of books; b) the achievements of Francis White in the Highlands; and c)the problem of housing within Scotland (particularly in Edinburgh), and outside Scotland, regarding establishing a place where missionaries can retire. He also notes that he has sent a letter to Patrizio Coneo, which will tell Lesley more about the mission. The original letter is dated 16 July 1665.

Description
An account of the resource
Copy of a letter from the prefect of the Scottish mission Alessandro Vinstero [Alexander Winster], to Guglielmo Lesleo [William Lesley], procurator of that mission in Rome. Winster has almost lost all hope in writing since his letters have not been answered. The most urgent problem is the lack of priests for the mission, which should at least be doubled for the amount of existing Catholics; Winster specifically states that the Highlands are in great need, and the people there are about to lose their last consolation in the person of Francis White (written "Bianchi"), since he did not get any provision from PF and cannot continue his work without one. Winster is unable to help both White and the schoolteacher present there [Alexander Macalister], and if the Scottish mission is not helped, it will soon go to ruin. Winster notes that he received the 50 scudi which PF had sent for Alessandro Leso [Alexander Leith]; Leith left the mission to join the Jesuits and they now want that money, however, Winster did not give it to them, and is waiting for PF's orders on the matter. He also wonders whether he has to mention the names of Catholics in his reports, which he considers dangerous, or rather write about them in general terms. He also asks whether he as a prefect or someone else in Scotland is allowed to consecrate altars and chalices. Winster furthermore mentions that Giovanni Valchero, [John Walker] and Gilberto Graio [Gilbert Gray] are fine. A post scriptum mentions that in the meantime he received letters from a certain mister Coneo [Patrizio Coneo?], or "le Grande," with the news that letters from the procurator [Lesley] and from PF are on their way. He also received the letter of exchange for White and the schoolteacher [Alexander Macalister], which he can only communicate to them in the spring. At the meeting of 20 April 1665 the cardinals decided that they will ask the nuncio for information, and that the secretary should keep in mind the matter of the provision.

Description
An account of the resource
Letter from Alexander Winster, prefect of the Scottish mission, to PF. Winster writes about the lack of priests, as in Scotland there are only four secular priests and one teacher. The missionaries are: John Walker, who has been in Aberdeen and the surrounding area for four years, but has currently been called to Edinburgh; Gilbert Gray who has been frequenting Buchan and Strathbogie, and Francis White who has remained in the Hebrides and in the northern mountains, serving the over 2,000 Catholics there alone. Seven years before there had been four priests in the Highlands and Hebrides, but currently no other missionary speaks Gaelic. Winster states that he has often asked for other Irish priests, especially for John White (who is now in Paris and would not refuse to work with his brother), but also others which the nuncio might propose. He complains about the fact that there are so few Scottish missionaries, since many have died or gone back to France; only Gilbert Gray has stayed. PF summary on f. 279v states that the archbishop of Armagh has already been asked for Irish priests. PF has also asked the nuncio in France to talk with CM about letting "il Bianchi" [John White] go to the Highland mission, but they answered that they would find someone else because John White is teaching; to date, they have not done so. PF meeting of 20 September 1666 decides that John White should be sent, and that the nuncio should be written to stating he must give him 30 scudi as viatcum. The nuncio is also asked to not listen anymore to the excuses of the Fathers of CM, since they never proposed any other priest, as they had promised to do. White should be declared missionary in the Highlands, under the prefecture of Alexander Winster, with the same provision as the other missionaries there have. The letter dated 15 March 1666.

Description
An account of the resource
Copy of a letter from Francis White [to William Lesley?]. He writes that he has visited [Alexander] Winster, whom he had not seen for four years. He went a very long way in order to ask Winster for the things needed for his very poor mission. Winster himself came to see White the previous autumn [1666] but did not find him, as White was far away on the islands and had fallen ill. White writes that whilst Winster had assisted him financially, the need for more missionaries is even more urgent than before. The promised help has not yet arrived, but the vastness of the area and the amount of converts, would provide enough work for twelve priests. Missionaries are also needed because, while there is great faith in God in this region, the people know nothing about the Catholic faith. They abhor the Protestant ministers, but there are no Catholic priests to replace them. White also writes that the superior [René Alméras] of his brother [John White] will send the latter to Scotland, only if [William Lesley] convinces the PF to write to Alméras and the nuncio to France on this matter. White furthermore asks that [William Lesley] convince PF to send money for books and approximately one thousand rosaries and other similar things. The letter is dated 29 April 1667, but it was received in Rome in 1668.
Date received 1668
Additional comments
Although the addressee is not mentioned explicitly, it is very likely to be William Lesley. This is because Francis White talks about the addressee's task of convincing PF of certain needs of the Scottish mission. This was precisely the task of the procurator of that mission in Rome, namely William Lesley.

Copy of a letter from Graio [Gilbert Gray] to [William] Lesley. He writes to the procurator that Lesley, on his departure, urged him to write frequently, as he often complained that the other missionaries did not write often enough. Gray, however, states that he has written frequently, as has the prefect, but both have received very few answers in return. Therefore they are wondering whether their efforts please PF or not. In the procurators' last letter, it also seems as if something was not satisfying him. Gray asks him to be more clear about what he is doing wrong, since this he has not been explicit. Lastly, he writes that a list has been made of all Catholics in the region, therefore they fear persecution. The letter dated 28 December 1667.

An account of the resource
Partial copy of a letter from the prefect of the Scottish mission [Alexander Winster], to its procurator in Rome, [William Lesley]. He writes about the fact that he has helped the two Irish Fathers [Mark and Francis MacDonnell?] who came to Scotland to help "Bianchi" [Francis White], and were in a miserable state: one of them is still ill and will probably never be able to go to the Highlands. They do not have any money or goods, so he lent them 22 scudi. Shortly after their arrival Giouanni Iruino [John Irvin] arrived with missionary patents from PF, but without any letter from any friend. It will be difficult to help all missionaries if they keep coming without any means of their own. He has paid the provisions of the missionaries out of the money from the marquis, and he will send the receipts as soon as he finds a safe opportunity. He asks the procurator to send his letters via a mister Hay in London, who will make sure they will be forwarded to Winster. He has also received the last letter from the procurator, in which Lesley informs him that PF has consented that he [Winster] may quit his task as prefect of the mission. Although he is very happy about the decision, he hopes that he has not done anything wrong to justify it.

Description
An account of the resource
Partial copy of a letter from the prefect of the Scottish mission [Alexander Winster], to its procurator in Rome, William Lesley. He expresses gratitude for PF sending help for the Highlands, and having promised a house where the missionaries can retire. He states that this house should not be in Dieppe or in any other harbour, since in these places the missionaries will be too well known. The two missionaries [Mark and Francis MacDonnell?] who were sent to help Bianchi [Francis White] have suffered much misfortune; they were shipwrecked but miraculously survived, then they both fell ill and would not have lived, had they not been helped by a fellow Franciscan [possibly John Smith - see APF SOCG 308, 360v-362v (database item 359)]. They arrived at the border of Scotland with no means whatsoever to continue their journey. The prefect felt the need to help them, without any order from PF, considering that they had come to help the mission. He writes about the great need for help, not only in the Highlands, but everywhere in Scotland, and deplores the fact that for years no priests have come from the Scottish Colleges and monasteries to help the Scottish mission. The letter dated 1 February 1668.

An account of the resource
Copy of a letter from Giovanni Iruino [John Irvin] to [William Lesley?]. He writes that in London he got his missionary patent and a letter from Cardinal "arberino" [Albericci], but no money. Some time ago he arrived in Edinburgh where he met [Alexander] Winster, the prefect of the mission, who has given him everything he needed for his ministry, including 10 scudi to travel to the North. He spent the 30 scudi he received from [Patrick?] Cuneo during his travel to Scotland. The letter dated 5 March 1668.
Additional comments
Although the addressee is not mentioned explicitly, it is very likely that it is William Lesley, for two reasons: a) the format of this copy is the same as that of other copies of letters addressed to William Lesley; and b) John Irvin mentions that he plans to write to PF very soon, which makes improbable that this letter is also addressed to PF.

An account of the resource
Copy of a letter from [Alexander Winster] to [William Lesley], the procurator of the Scottish mission. He writes that more than a month ago he wrote to PF about the long and difficult journey of Father Marco and Father Francesco MacDonnelli [Mark and Francis MacDonnell]. He has received them in his own house and provides them with everything they need until help from PF arrives, which, he writes, has to be soon otherwise their suffering will be too great. Giovanni Iruino [John Irvin] has also arrived, likewise without any means of subsistence. [Winster] writes that it is strange to see all these people coming, because he has not been informed by [William Lesley] or by anybody else about their arrival. Since they have PF patents, he will take care of them as best he can. [John Irvin] will soon go to the Highlands, but Father Marco is still too weak. [Winster] has heard about a certain Alessandro Iruino [Alexander Irvin] who is also on his way to Scotland, but it is so far only a rumor. He complains about not having heard from [William Lesley] in two years. Attached there is a letter from Irvin and from the MacDonnell Fathers. The letter dated 17 March 1668.
Additional comments
The author is probably Alexander Winster because he mentions a (signed) letter of his written a month before.

Copy of a letter from [Alexander Winster] to [William] Lesley. He states that he has written so much in his previous letters, that he has not much left to tell, until he receives a response; he has not received anything in two years. The attached letter to PF [which is not there anymore] should provide enough information. Winster wants to know whether Alessandro Iruino [Alexander Irvin] is to be counted among the missionaries, since he has no patent or recommandation. He complains about the need of money and the fact that the financial support always arrives too late. He furthermore writes that the Marquis of Huntly has gone to London, but will probably need to come back to Edinburgh. He also notes that all of his companions are doing well except for Marco Macdonel [Mark MacDonnell] who is still ill. He gave him the money he needed, as well as to Giovanni Irvino [John Iruin], and to the others in Edinburgh. The letter dated 4 April 1668.

Description
An account of the resource
Copy of a letter from [John] Valchero [Walker] to William Lesley. He writes to have understood from Tomasse Lumisden, [Thomas Lumsden] that PF intends to appoint him as prefect of the Scottish mission. He has no ambition to join the mission, as he was displeased upon hearing that things are not going well. The truth is, he writes, that were it not for the great affection that the Scottish Catholics have for him, he would have gone to England, where he was invited to lead a more quiet life. He is old and suffers from the cold winters, but he is ready to obey PF if the cardinals want him to stay in Scotland. The two Irish missionaries [Mark and Francis MacDonnell?] have finally arrived, however, they are in a very bad physical condition, and are in need of both money and the "ornaments" necessary for celebrating mass. He furthermore writes that he has heard that six missionaries "of St. Isidore" [see also APF SOCG 308, 303r, 305v (database item 349)] are about to join the mission, but in his opinion two at the time are enough, as they need to have provisions for at least the first year. He describes the need for books, and explains that although he does not agree with [Alexander] Winster that it is necessary to have exact orders from PF as to what books to buy, he nonetheless asks the procurator to consider obtaining these orders, because new books would do much good. He notes that an English version of "il Spondano" [Henri de Sponde, Spondanus] would be needed, in order to counter the great ingnorance of many (especially with respect to Church history), and bring them to conversion. The letter dated 17 April 1668.

An account of the resource
Relation on the mission of Scotland. There are eight missionaries in Scotland, including Fran'o Blanco [Francis White], Franc' Magdonel [Francis MacDonnell] and Robert Monro; they stay in the mountains in northern Scotland and in The Hebrides. On the island of Bara everyone is Catholic, on Ovist (the biggest island) there are 700 Catholics, and in Cordare and Mordare almost everyone is Catholic. The Catholics are obliged to pay a tax. Eugenio Macalister [Eugene Macalister] has worked in the school for some time. Some time ago Nicolo Dunbar was also sent to the mountains.
Additional comments
Because of the presence of Francis MacDonnel, the composition of the document must be dated after 1668.

Description
An account of the resource
Letter from Alexander Lesley to William Lesley. Alexander Lesley would like to take the place of William Lesley in Rome. However he would first like to see that they send subjects and missionaries to the Scottish mission, and provide money for their needs, as they have been making a lot of progress. There are two potential students for the College in Rome: Guglielmo Lesleo [William Lesley, not the recipient of the letter] and Giovanni Giamesson [John Jameson] who is currently studying in Aberdeen. PF has unanimously decided to give Sig'r Burnetto [David Burnet] permission to go to the Scottish College in Paris. Sig're Barclaio [Robert Barclay] has chosen a very excellent prefect. Alexander Lesley has also asked Burnet to thank Barclay for his assistance during the famine in Scotland, which had been particularly bad this year. William Lesley (the procurator of the mission), aks PF to send the provision to the missionaries. As there is a famine in Scotland, William Lesley suggests that they send them extra provisions. He also states that there have never been any complaints or discord in the Scottish mission.
Date discussed: 1676-01-10
Additional comments
The first half probably consists of parts copied by William Lesley from a letter written by his brother Alexander Lesley, who was a missionary in Scotland. The latter half of the letter are remarks made by William Lesley.
