Description
An account of the resource
Report from Madagascar sent by Nicolas Etienne (prefect of the Madagascar mission), to René Alméras, dated 16 January 1664, to be forwarded to PF. The report starts with their journey from France (including quite detailed information about Cape Verde, where they stopped on the way), the activities of previous CM missionaries in Madagascar, and their own present activities. Discussed in PF on 19 January 1665; matter assigned to Cardinal Pallotto. PF notes on 55v only summarize the description of Cape Verde, and Etienne’s recommendation that missionaries be sent there.
Date discussed 1665-01-19

An account of the resource
Report on the status and activities of CM. The congregation was founded in 1524 and approved in 1632, with Vincent de Paul as superior general. The congregation has 20 houses, of which 16 are located in France (in Lorraine and Savoy), and two in Italy (in Rome and Genoa). Other houses are located in Ireland, Madagascar, on the Barbary coast, and in the Hebrides. The report also notes that CM has three aims: a) the perfection of the spirit; b) the maintaining of spiritual health of others, especially the poor inhabitants of the countryside; and c) the education of the clergy.
Additional comments
Written after 1648 (the Madagascar mission started in 1648 and all the other houses mentioned in this document were founded earlier).

Description
An account of the resource
Partial copy of a letter from the prefect of the Scottish mission [Alexander Winster], to its procurator in Rome, [William Lesley]. He writes about the fact that he has helped the two Irish Fathers [Mark and Francis MacDonnell?] who came to Scotland to help "Bianchi" [Francis White], and were in a miserable state: one of them is still ill and will probably never be able to go to the Highlands. They do not have any money or goods, so he lent them 22 scudi. Shortly after their arrival Giouanni Iruino [John Irvin] arrived with missionary patents from PF, but without any letter from any friend. It will be difficult to help all missionaries if they keep coming without any means of their own. He has paid the provisions of the missionaries out of the money from the marquis, and he will send the receipts as soon as he finds a safe opportunity. He asks the procurator to send his letters via a mister Hay in London, who will make sure they will be forwarded to Winster. He has also received the last letter from the procurator, in which Lesley informs him that PF has consented that he [Winster] may quit his task as prefect of the mission. Although he is very happy about the decision, he hopes that he has not done anything wrong to justify it.

An account of the resource
Copy of a letter from [Alexander Winster] to [William Lesley], the procurator of the Scottish mission. He writes that more than a month ago he wrote to PF about the long and difficult journey of Father Marco and Father Francesco MacDonnelli [Mark and Francis MacDonnell]. He has received them in his own house and provides them with everything they need until help from PF arrives, which, he writes, has to be soon otherwise their suffering will be too great. Giovanni Iruino [John Irvin] has also arrived, likewise without any means of subsistence. [Winster] writes that it is strange to see all these people coming, because he has not been informed by [William Lesley] or by anybody else about their arrival. Since they have PF patents, he will take care of them as best he can. [John Irvin] will soon go to the Highlands, but Father Marco is still too weak. [Winster] has heard about a certain Alessandro Iruino [Alexander Irvin] who is also on his way to Scotland, but it is so far only a rumor. He complains about not having heard from [William Lesley] in two years. Attached there is a letter from Irvin and from the MacDonnell Fathers. The letter dated 17 March 1668.
Additional comments
The author is probably Alexander Winster because he mentions a (signed) letter of his written a month before.

Description
An account of the resource
Partial copy of a letter from the prefect of the Scottish mission [Alexander Winster], to its procurator in Rome, William Lesley. He expresses gratitude for PF sending help for the Highlands, and having promised a house where the missionaries can retire. He states that this house should not be in Dieppe or in any other harbour, since in these places the missionaries will be too well known. The two missionaries [Mark and Francis MacDonnell?] who were sent to help Bianchi [Francis White] have suffered much misfortune; they were shipwrecked but miraculously survived, then they both fell ill and would not have lived, had they not been helped by a fellow Franciscan [possibly John Smith - see APF SOCG 308, 360v-362v (database item 359)]. They arrived at the border of Scotland with no means whatsoever to continue their journey. The prefect felt the need to help them, without any order from PF, considering that they had come to help the mission. He writes about the great need for help, not only in the Highlands, but everywhere in Scotland, and deplores the fact that for years no priests have come from the Scottish Colleges and monasteries to help the Scottish mission. The letter dated 1 February 1668.

Copy of a letter from [Alexander Winster] to [William] Lesley. He states that he has written so much in his previous letters, that he has not much left to tell, until he receives a response; he has not received anything in two years. The attached letter to PF [which is not there anymore] should provide enough information. Winster wants to know whether Alessandro Iruino [Alexander Irvin] is to be counted among the missionaries, since he has no patent or recommandation. He complains about the need of money and the fact that the financial support always arrives too late. He furthermore writes that the Marquis of Huntly has gone to London, but will probably need to come back to Edinburgh. He also notes that all of his companions are doing well except for Marco Macdonel [Mark MacDonnell] who is still ill. He gave him the money he needed, as well as to Giovanni Irvino [John Iruin], and to the others in Edinburgh. The letter dated 4 April 1668.

Description
An account of the resource
Copy of a letter from Alexander Winster, prefect of the Scottish mission, to its procurator in Rome, William Lesley. In the letter he: a) requests news about Thomas Lumsden for the third time, as he has not heard from Lumsden since he went to France; b) writes about the great need of missionaries (especially Irish missionaries who speak Gaelic), for the mission in the Highlands where there are between 3,000 and 4,000 Catholics; the letter notes that missionaries for the Lowlands are also needed; c) notes that Francis White and the schoolteacher [Alexander] Macalister are in great need and require help, and that he as prefect wants to receive precise orders on what to do to help them. He furthermore complains about the lack of help from the Scottish College in Paris; d) notes the mission itself is going well, but there are too many Catholics for the scarce amount of priests. Moreover, the king has instituted a tribunal to put order to the ecclesiastical situation, which causes fear among the people. He is said to be forwarding a letter from [Francis] White and one from the schoolteacher [Macalister]. Unsigned and dated the 28 March 1664. PF notes repeat the great need of help for Francis White described by the prefect, and add the possibility to accept earlier proposals of the archbishop of Armagh [Edmund O'Reilly] to send some of his Irish priests. The cardinals decide to provide for financial help for Francis White and to send the priests proposed by the archbishop of Armagh, after knowing from the procurator, however, how many should be sent and what characteristics they should have.
Date discussed 1664-06-30
Additional comments
The letter from Francis White to which the current letter refers might be APF SOCG 308, 54r-v (database item 315), which was written on 13 March 1664 and was discussed during the same PF meeting.

Copy of a letter from Alexander Winster to William Lesley. He writes very extensively about the situation of the Scottish mission, and the different problems and the solutions he sees. Also included, are his notes about the communication between the mission and PF, the role of William Lesley, concern about the visitation and financial situation, and the relationship with the Jesuits. This letter was written to the procurator to inform him about the report he wrote directly to PF. That report seems to be in answer to a list of questions by PF. The letter dated 18 December 1668.

An account of the resource
Letter from Francis White to [William Lesley?]. He writes that he has only received the letter from [William Lesley?] in June, as [Alexander] Winster did not want to risk forwarding it, since he did not know where White was. He describes problems between himself and a Dominican, and also with a protestant minister. He writes about the fact that he has so much to do in such difficult circumstances that were he to remain without help, he would have to leave the Highlands. He is grateful, however, for the provision, and for the schoolteacher. White notes that he would like to have another teacher, since on the islands there is a protestant teacher. He asks [William Lesley?] to excuse Eugenio Macalastrio [Alexander Macalister] for not having written the names of the schoolchildren and their parents [actually, Macalister did at least mention family names in his letter to Lesley, see APF SOCG 308, 224r-225v (database item 336)], because they fear that these will be communicated to the court, were these letters to be intercepted. He asks if it could be ordered that his brother Giouanni Bianchi [John White] be sent to help him. He would also need other priests, but they have to be excellent due to Highlanders viewing priests as saints on earth. He writes that the Highlands and islands could soon be Catholic, if only there were enough missionaries. Therefore he urges [William Lesley?] to see to the appointment of new missionaries. The letter is dated 14 June 1665.
Date discussed, 1665-11-09
Additional comments
There is no signature nor address on this document. However, we can be sure that it is written by Francis White, since he refers to John White as his brother. It is probably addressed to William Lesley, since the (copies of) other letters addressed to him use the exact same format.

An account of the resource
Copy of a letter from Graio [Gilbert Gray] to [William] Lesley. He writes to the procurator that Lesley, on his departure, urged him to write frequently, as he often complained that the other missionaries did not write often enough. Gray, however, states that he has written frequently, as has the prefect, but both have received very few answers in return. Therefore they are wondering whether their efforts please PF or not. In the procurators' last letter, it also seems as if something was not satisfying him. Gray asks him to be more clear about what he is doing wrong, since this he has not been explicit. Lastly, he writes that a list has been made of all Catholics in the region, therefore they fear persecution. The letter dated 28 December 1667.

Description
An account of the resource
Copy of a letter from [John] Valchero [Walker] to William Lesley. He writes to have understood from Tomasse Lumisden, [Thomas Lumsden] that PF intends to appoint him as prefect of the Scottish mission. He has no ambition to join the mission, as he was displeased upon hearing that things are not going well. The truth is, he writes, that were it not for the great affection that the Scottish Catholics have for him, he would have gone to England, where he was invited to lead a more quiet life. He is old and suffers from the cold winters, but he is ready to obey PF if the cardinals want him to stay in Scotland. The two Irish missionaries [Mark and Francis MacDonnell?] have finally arrived, however, they are in a very bad physical condition, and are in need of both money and the "ornaments" necessary for celebrating mass. He furthermore writes that he has heard that six missionaries "of St. Isidore" [see also APF SOCG 308, 303r, 305v (database item 349)] are about to join the mission, but in his opinion two at the time are enough, as they need to have provisions for at least the first year. He describes the need for books, and explains that although he does not agree with [Alexander] Winster that it is necessary to have exact orders from PF as to what books to buy, he nonetheless asks the procurator to consider obtaining these orders, because new books would do much good. He notes that an English version of "il Spondano" [Henri de Sponde, Spondanus] would be needed, in order to counter the great ingnorance of many (especially with respect to Church history), and bring them to conversion. The letter dated 17 April 1668.

An account of the resource
Copy of a letter from John Walker to the procurator of the Scottish mission in Rome, William Lesley. He writes to have received a letter from the procurator. With this letter Walker wants to underline a few points made in his letter to PF so that Lesley can clarify these for PF. He has left this letter for PF open, so that Lesley can first read it himself. The most important issues are: a) the enormous need of books; b) the achievements of Francis White in the Highlands; and c)the problem of housing within Scotland (particularly in Edinburgh), and outside Scotland, regarding establishing a place where missionaries can retire. He also notes that he has sent a letter to Patrizio Coneo, which will tell Lesley more about the mission. The original letter is dated 16 July 1665.

Letter from Alexander Macalister to PF in which he explains that last year (before his conversion to Catholicism), he had a school on the Isle of Skye, where he taught at least 70 children of Protestant parents. When he converted to Catholicism, a large part of his students followed suit, and he was expelled by the ministers when they discovered this. When he asked Francis White for help, the latter gave him 24 students. He has never asked for money from the people there. He also underlines the fact that Francis White greatly needs other missionaries to help him fulfill his tasks. The letter signed and dated 27 June 1665.

Letter from Alexander Macalister, schoolteacher in Scotland, to William Lesley, procurator of the Scottish mission in Rome. He writes that he has 24 pupils at the house of count MacDonnell in Glengarry. The students are from the following families: "Macdonaldi, Cameroni, Mackmartini, Fraserij, Scotti, Stuardi, Makiuerij" [MacDonnell, Cameron, MacMartin, Fraser, Scott, Stuart and MacIver]; all but one have converted to Catholicism. Macalister adds that he is in great need of books. Winster has promised to have the necessary books sent from London, but Macalister is afraid that they will be seized. Its noted that some children have had to learn how to read from ‘heretic’ books. Macalister first taught on the Isle of Skye, but when the ministers noticed that he was Catholic and was converting his students, they banned him from the island. He never received any money from anyone, until he received 60 scudi from the prefect [Alexander] Winster, sent by PF. The letter dated 14 June 1665.

Description
An account of the resource
Letter from Al' Winster [Alexander Winster] to PF. In these dangerous times Winster is afraid to write to PF, because if found, his writings will be regarded as treason. Oats, [Bedlo] and others wrote a book about the treason of the Catholics, of which Winster will say no more, because he is sure that PF already knows about this. The situation in Scotland is not as bad as it is in England, however there are hard measures in place against priests who did not leave the Kingdom; this is why they have to disguise themselves and work at night. The people of the islands and mountains are suffering, as since Il Bianco [Francis White] passed away, there are not enough missionaries to help. As there were no other possibilities, he had to send a Franciscan named Drein to these regions, despite the fact he did not have the faculties for the mission. Winster asks PF to find a Irish priest for the misson to replace Francis White. He also asks PF to do something about the situation otherwise the whole mission will go to ruin, which would be a shame since there are more than 4,000 Catholics in the area. Fr. Macdonell [Francis MacDonnell] wrote to Winster stating that he had to retreat to the convent to recover his health. Monro [Robert Monro] went to Barra, the most remote island of the Hebrides. Alexander Lesley, who is the visitor to the Scottish mission, returned from his trip to the islands and mountains really sick. Winster does not think it possible for him to stay in Scotland, and D. Guthrie [David Gutheri] and R. Dauisone [Davidson?] have also been sick for the better part of the year; Winster has helped them with a great part of the annual provision. Winster asks PF to send David Burnet to Scotland, though he does not need to take great risks, as from France or the Netherlands he can easily take a boat to the regions of Marquess Huntly. Its noted that whilst they really need him at the mission, he is not really of much use in Paris (where he is currently residing). The other missionaries are doing fine, G. Gordon [George Gordon] is in Strathbogie, Innes [George Innes] in Angus, Whytford in Edinburgh and its surroundings, and Aless'o Irvino [Alexander Irvin] is were he usually resides. He asks PF to send them some portable items (possibly altars); the mission does not own anything, as the missionaries always arrive with empty hands. Winster asks PF to give the reply to the Scottish College in Paris. The pages contain a second letter, which is a small note from Alexander Winster to John Irvin. In this letter, he asks Irvin to present his service to the Lord of Norfolk.

Description
An account of the resource
Letter from Alexander Winster, prefect of the Scottish mission, to PF. Winster explains that he had neither written nor sent any letters to date, for fear that his letters would be opened and read, due to the ongoing war between England and the Netherlands. Moreover he waited for letters from the other missionaries to arrive, which they now had (except for one), and that he is now forwarding them to PF. Winster writes about his current work in Edinburgh, and that many Catholics from the whole reign come to this city for the Parliament and the judges. On feast days he sometimes needs to administer the sacraments to 20 or 30 Catholics, and to say mass twice, since otherwise the great number of people might rise suspicions; he also notes that helping the sick is a difficult task, because he is the only priest in the city, and it is very dangerous. He describes the danger of conversion and of other activities that go against the local penal laws. In the Highlands however, the "harvest" is big, but there are too few "workers," namely Francis White alone; others do not speak the language. Winster notes that if it were not for the Jesuits present in larger numbers, it would be impossible to continue the work of the mission. Therefore he asks for other missionaries, especially for 'Joannes Blanchs' [John White] who would be very apt for the mission. He complains about the fact that no missionaries have come from the Scottish colleges in Europe, and that there is no place where the missionaries can retire, which causes them to leave the mission, as has already happened with Alexander Leith and Thomas Lumsden. He also asks for books. The letter is signed and dated 21 July (old style, thus 31 July 1665), and was discussed on 9 November 1665.

Description
An account of the resource
Letter from Alexander Winster, prefect of the Scottish mission, to PF. Winster writes about the lack of priests, as in Scotland there are only four secular priests and one teacher. The missionaries are: John Walker, who has been in Aberdeen and the surrounding area for four years, but has currently been called to Edinburgh; Gilbert Gray who has been frequenting Buchan and Strathbogie, and Francis White who has remained in the Hebrides and in the northern mountains, serving the over 2,000 Catholics there alone. Seven years before there had been four priests in the Highlands and Hebrides, but currently no other missionary speaks Gaelic. Winster states that he has often asked for other Irish priests, especially for John White (who is now in Paris and would not refuse to work with his brother), but also others which the nuncio might propose. He complains about the fact that there are so few Scottish missionaries, since many have died or gone back to France; only Gilbert Gray has stayed. PF summary on f. 279v states that the archbishop of Armagh has already been asked for Irish priests. PF has also asked the nuncio in France to talk with CM about letting "il Bianchi" [John White] go to the Highland mission, but they answered that they would find someone else because John White is teaching; to date, they have not done so. PF meeting of 20 September 1666 decides that John White should be sent, and that the nuncio should be written to stating he must give him 30 scudi as viatcum. The nuncio is also asked to not listen anymore to the excuses of the Fathers of CM, since they never proposed any other priest, as they had promised to do. White should be declared missionary in the Highlands, under the prefecture of Alexander Winster, with the same provision as the other missionaries there have. The letter dated 15 March 1666.

Description
An account of the resource
Letter from the prefect of the Scottish mission Alexander Winster, to its procurator in Rome, William Lesley. Winster explains that he had neither written nor sent any letters to date, for fear that his letters would be opened and read, due to the ongoing war between England and the Netherlands. He writes about the current situation of the mission, among which the fact that he now is the only missionary in Edinburgh, since also the Jesuits left that city. He has several requests: a) a house for the Scottish missionaries in a Catholic country to retire in case of illness or old age; b) more missionaries to be sent to the Scottish mission; and c) money to buy books. He also asks if PF could arrange that John White, brother of the only missionary working in the Highlands at that moment [Francis White] be sent to the same mission. He asks what to do with money sent from PF which he has yet to spend. Letter signed and dated 19 July 1665.

Description
An account of the resource
Translation of a letter from Alexander Winster to William Lesley. Winster states to have only recently (at the beginning of the month) received the letter and package sent by William Lesley, more than eight or ten months before. They had arrived in Scotland three or four months earlier, but since he has been traveling he did not see them until now. He reports on the situation in Scotland, on the continuing need in the Highlands, on the financial situation of the schoolteacher, the financial situation of the mission in general, the great need of books for the school (as well as for ordinary Catholics), the fact that Giouanni Iruino [John Irvin] has not yet arrived from France, and that another missionary who arrived recently, has already passed away. He furthermore writes about the problem of dividing the missionaries equally over the country (which he suggests PF might set up some rules about), the importance of the Huntly family and the usefulness of Winster's work among them. He also asks if PF or even William Lesley could write a letter to the young and devout Marquis of Huntly, to encourage him to persevere in the Catholic faith. Lastly he writes that the family and friends of William Lesley are doing well. The letter dated 12 November 1666.

Description
An account of the resource
Letter referring to the success of two missions ordered by the bishop of Valence in Estoile (in spring 1639) and St. Giovanni di Reyan (fall-winter 1639 to January 1640). The bishop himself donated 200 scudi for this purpose. The missionaries taught the catechism, preached, made peace among enemies, converted heretics, heard general confessions and gave communion to people from those localities and many more who came from neighbouring places; one of these places, for instance, only had 1,500 inhabitants, but 7,000 were reported to have confessed and received communion there; of all, only four or five people did not make general confession. PF notes on 346v indicate that Christophe Authier is the author of the letter and also that the Cardinal of Santa Croce requested, on behalf of Christophe Authier, the apostolic confirmation of Authier's "Congregation of the Missions" in the Aix diocese and other dioceses in France. PF notes also show that the cardinals decided to send a letter to Authier, indicating that he should not establish missions in places where there already are other missionaries sent by PF.
Date discussed 1640-08-20
Additional comments
a) Based on the content of the letter and the date of discussion in PF, the letter was written sometime between January and August 1640; and b) According to PF notes on 346v, the author of the letter is Christophe Authier.

Description
An account of the resource
Copy of a letter from Francis White [to William Lesley?]. He writes that he has visited [Alexander] Winster, whom he had not seen for four years. He went a very long way in order to ask Winster for the things needed for his very poor mission. Winster himself came to see White the previous autumn [1666] but did not find him, as White was far away on the islands and had fallen ill. White writes that whilst Winster had assisted him financially, the need for more missionaries is even more urgent than before. The promised help has not yet arrived, but the vastness of the area and the amount of converts, would provide enough work for twelve priests. Missionaries are also needed because, while there is great faith in God in this region, the people know nothing about the Catholic faith. They abhor the Protestant ministers, but there are no Catholic priests to replace them. White also writes that the superior [René Alméras] of his brother [John White] will send the latter to Scotland, only if [William Lesley] convinces the PF to write to Alméras and the nuncio to France on this matter. White furthermore asks that [William Lesley] convince PF to send money for books and approximately one thousand rosaries and other similar things. The letter is dated 29 April 1667, but it was received in Rome in 1668.
Date received 1668
Additional comments
Although the addressee is not mentioned explicitly, it is very likely to be William Lesley. This is because Francis White talks about the addressee's task of convincing PF of certain needs of the Scottish mission. This was precisely the task of the procurator of that mission in Rome, namely William Lesley.

Description
An account of the resource
Copy of a letter from Francis White [to William Lesley?]. He has not received any answer to his letter dated March 1667, and he states that no missionary has come to help him. [Alexander] Winster had written to him that he was sure that his brother [John White] would come, but now, White writes that [René] Alméras does not want him to go, although White is certain that his brother would be very happy to do so. He [either Winster or Alméras] wrote to White that two Franciscans were coming to help him, but they have not arrived yet, and they have not written to [Alexander] Winster either. White proposes that PF write to some prelate in Ireland or to his brother, Edmondo Bianchi [Edmond White], vicar apostolic in Limerick; the latter would certainly be able to send some good clerics. In this way they could avoid relying on priests who never behave like secular ones, but instead have their own "particular practices." The letter dated 1 January 1668.
Additional comments
Although the addressee is not mentioned explicitly, it is very likely that it is William Lesley, since the format of this copy is the same as that of other copies of letters sent to William Lesley.

Letter from Francis White to PF. He writes to have received 25 scudi from William Lesley, sent to him by PF. He has served in the mission for 14 years (orginally sent by CM), and in this period at least 14 parishes have been converted to Catholicism; White notes that if he had had any companions, all parishes would have been converted. He describes the opposition of the Protestant ministers, the need for other priests (especially for his brother John White), the fact that he can only go to confession once a year (despite needing to say mass every day), the poverty in the mountains, and the difficult circumstances under which he has to live. The letter is dated 27 June 1665.

An account of the resource
Copy of a part of a letter from Francis White to the prefect of the Scottish mission, Alexander Winster. The missionary writes that he is exhausted from the work he has to do. White states that it was hard even when there were still four other priests to help him, but now it is almost impossible. Especially because he converted so many, and the number of people inclined to receive instruction, and the sacraments is increasing every day. Against his wishes, he gave up conversions because he can hardly assist those he already converted every two years. He is in great need of help from "the many friends in Rome" and asks the prefect to help. The copy is dated 13 March 1664.

Extensive report by Jean Le Vacher on the situation in Tunis, which lists his missionary work, the behavior of other priests, and the case of several Maltese [Vincenzo Piccinini and Giuseppe and Francesco Guerara] who took 1000 pezze from the Dey, which he had destined for the redemption of a slave in Messina. He moreover reports that there are no priests left in Tripoli. At PF general meeting of 30 June 1664, the cardinals decided that Le Vacher should be asked for more information about the Dey's money; that CM superior [René Alméras] should be asked whether new missionaries would be available for this mission; and lastly that Le Vacher should order the priests that they abstain from usury and commercial activities, on the pain of interdiction to say mass.

An account of the resource
Letter from Jean Le Vacher, vicar apostolic in Algiers, to PF. He writes about his travel to Algiers where he arrived on 24 May. He describes the situation in Algiers, that there are 14,000 or 15,000 Christian slaves, among whom there are around 100 women, and 300-400 children under the age of 15. He writes that there are five secular priests and two regulars, who did not all wear the priestly vestments. Upon his arrival he bought appropriate vestments for them and also managed to obtain permission from the Muslim rulers of the city for them to wear the vestments. He writes about the four bagnos that are in the city and the hospitals. Lastly he asks for some indulgences, medals, and crucifixes. The letter was discussed during PF meeting of 13 May 1669. The cardinals decided to answer Jean Le Vacher with a letter expressing their great esteem. The request of indulgences should be forwarded to the Congregation of Indulgences. The medals should be bought and the crucifixes issued, and indulgences should be obtained from the pope.

Description
An account of the resource
Copy of a letter from Giovanni Iruino [John Irvin] to [William Lesley?]. He writes that in London he got his missionary patent and a letter from Cardinal "arberino" [Albericci], but no money. Some time ago he arrived in Edinburgh where he met [Alexander] Winster, the prefect of the mission, who has given him everything he needed for his ministry, including 10 scudi to travel to the North. He spent the 30 scudi he received from [Patrick?] Cuneo during his travel to Scotland. The letter dated 5 March 1668.
Additional comments
Although the addressee is not mentioned explicitly, it is very likely that it is William Lesley, for two reasons: a) the format of this copy is the same as that of other copies of letters addressed to William Lesley; and b) John Irvin mentions that he plans to write to PF very soon, which makes improbable that this letter is also addressed to PF.

Description
An account of the resource
Letter from Marcello Costa to [the PF Prefect Paluzio Altieri]. He had already sent a letter dated 1 September, but because many letters do not reach their destination, he decided to send another one. He wanted to be sure that PF knows that he is following the rules set to him through the patents he received as apostolic missionary, and as provicar from Levacher [Jean Le Vacher]. It is hard to imagine how great of need the city of Bizerte was in regarding the need for priests. By living there he discovered a great amount of Christians. Besides those working on the agricultural estates (massarie) there are also 80 Christians working in the gardens, vineyards, and woods outside the city. Before his arrival they would never come to the city, but now that he is residing there, they come to hear mass, confess, and for Holy communion. For many it had been ten or twelve years since they had last seen a priest. There are many people in Bizerte, especially the poor Sards, that keep experiencing raids. The Christians are staying in six bagnos, S. Lucia, L'Annontiata, la Concettione, S. Gioseppe, S. Rocco and La Trinità. Besides these, there are also 22 Christians staying at the vineyard of the Baxà of Tripoli, three miles from the city. At the agricultural estate (massaria) of Sala (owned by a Turk from Tunis and 10 miles from the city), there are 20 to 30 Christians. In the agricultural estate (massaria) of Rais Gibello, 20 miles from the city, there are also many Christians. Before his arrival, Bizerte was a mess, and many people died without sacraments, and without having confessed for years; only God knows how many souls were lost. Since he arrived however, he has driven out the bad customs and takes care of not only the city, but also the countryside. This Christmas he went to Portafarina to visit and console the 200 Christians living there. The Christians at the vineyard are travelling every sunday to hear mass. In the four months that he has been in Bizerte, he has organized three general communions. In three months three Christians died, who without his help would have died without sacraments. If the provicar of Tunis, Carlo D'Ancona, would aks him under false pretenses to return to Tunis, he asks PF to prevent this. If PF asks him to return, he will be obedient, but he is really needed in Bizerte; he is working there alone, whilst there are six priests working in Tunis. He has worked alone for three years for the church of Tunis, and has always been working hard for the spiritual needs of the Christians. That is why he thinks that two priests would be enough to serve this church. He tells PF that his request is to ease his conscience, and he has also told Jean Le Vacher the same thing. If they order him to return to Tunis, he will however go. When he left Rome for Tunis, PF granted him a provision of 24 scudi annually for three years. He has alredy received the first two years, and the last one ends in August. He asks PF to send him the provision requested by the consul of Spain, Antonio Borgi, who is staying in Livorno. PF Secretary [Urbano Cerri] states that Costa already received his provision. When he was made missionary in Bizerte, it was decided in PF meeting of 28 February 1673 to give him a provision of 30 scudi for three years. In the case PF decides to send this to him, they can send it to Antonio Borgi, as requested by Costa. PF decides to send Costa the provision of 30 scudi by means of Antonio Borgi.
