Description
An account of the resource
Letter referring to the success of two missions ordered by the bishop of Valence in Estoile (in spring 1639) and St. Giovanni di Reyan (fall-winter 1639 to January 1640). The bishop himself donated 200 scudi for this purpose. The missionaries taught the catechism, preached, made peace among enemies, converted heretics, heard general confessions and gave communion to people from those localities and many more who came from neighbouring places; one of these places, for instance, only had 1,500 inhabitants, but 7,000 were reported to have confessed and received communion there; of all, only four or five people did not make general confession. PF notes on 346v indicate that Christophe Authier is the author of the letter and also that the Cardinal of Santa Croce requested, on behalf of Christophe Authier, the apostolic confirmation of Authier's "Congregation of the Missions" in the Aix diocese and other dioceses in France. PF notes also show that the cardinals decided to send a letter to Authier, indicating that he should not establish missions in places where there already are other missionaries sent by PF.
Date discussed 1640-08-20
Additional comments
a) Based on the content of the letter and the date of discussion in PF, the letter was written sometime between January and August 1640; and b) According to PF notes on 346v, the author of the letter is Christophe Authier.

Report on the status and activities of CM. The congregation was founded in 1524 and approved in 1632, with Vincent de Paul as superior general. The congregation has 20 houses, of which 16 are located in France (in Lorraine and Savoy), and two in Italy (in Rome and Genoa). Other houses are located in Ireland, Madagascar, on the Barbary coast, and in the Hebrides. The report also notes that CM has three aims: a) the perfection of the spirit; b) the maintaining of spiritual health of others, especially the poor inhabitants of the countryside; and c) the education of the clergy.
Additional comments
Written after 1648 (the Madagascar mission started in 1648 and all the other houses mentioned in this document were founded earlier).

An account of the resource
Report from the Scottish mission, with the names of the missionaries and a short description of their activities: Giovanni Smitteo [John Smith] studied in Rome and Paris, and is working near the border between Scotland and England. Guglielmo Bannatino [William Ballantyne] who converted in France and studied in Paris and Rome, is living in Aberdeen where most Catholics live, but he travels a lot. Giacomo Crittonio [James Crichton] studied in Rome and Paris, and is working in the west of Scotland where his family lives. Giouannj Valchero [John Walker] studied in Rome and was converted by Ballantyne there. Ballantyne invited him to join the Scottish mission. Giouannj Brusio [John Bruce] studied in Rome and worked as a chaplain to a Scottish regiment in France. He is about to go to Scotland and is awaiting the requested faculties. Tomaso Lumisdeno [Thomas Lumsden] was converted in France and ordained in Rome. Like Walker he is awaiting his faculties so he can go on the Scottish mission. [Roberto Barclaio] Robert Barclay is the procurator of this mission in Paris.
Additional comments
Although this report is undated, it must have been written after 1650, when Ballentyne was back in Scotland after his journey to France, and before August 1653, when Lumsden was already in Scotland.

Description
An account of the resource
Summary of reports from the years 1652-1655 by Francis White, Thomas Lumsden and Dermot Duiguin to Vincent de Paul (translated from French to Italian). The summary principally reports the work of Duiguin and White in the Hebrides; they state in the report that ignorance among the residents is enormous, but the people seem very eager to learn. They also note that great miracles are said to happen by the use of sacred water. The reports state that the region cannot be ministered by only two priests, as both the distances between the islands and the number of people are too big; more missionaries are therefore requested. The reports also note that on the last day of February 1655, Francis White (who was staying at the house of Marchioness of Huntly), got taken prisoner, and is now in Edinburgh.

Description
An account of the resource
Copy of a part of a letter from Francis White to the prefect of the Scottish mission, Alexander Winster. The missionary writes that he is exhausted from the work he has to do. White states that it was hard even when there were still four other priests to help him, but now it is almost impossible. Especially because he converted so many, and the number of people inclined to receive instruction, and the sacraments is increasing every day. Against his wishes, he gave up conversions because he can hardly assist those he already converted every two years. He is in great need of help from "the many friends in Rome" and asks the prefect to help. The copy is dated 13 March 1664.

An account of the resource
Extensive report by Jean Le Vacher on the situation in Tunis, which lists his missionary work, the behavior of other priests, and the case of several Maltese [Vincenzo Piccinini and Giuseppe and Francesco Guerara] who took 1000 pezze from the Dey, which he had destined for the redemption of a slave in Messina. He moreover reports that there are no priests left in Tripoli. At PF general meeting of 30 June 1664, the cardinals decided that Le Vacher should be asked for more information about the Dey's money; that CM superior [René Alméras] should be asked whether new missionaries would be available for this mission; and lastly that Le Vacher should order the priests that they abstain from usury and commercial activities, on the pain of interdiction to say mass.

Description
An account of the resource
Copy of a letter from Alexander Winster, prefect of the Scottish mission, to its procurator in Rome, William Lesley. In the letter he: a) requests news about Thomas Lumsden for the third time, as he has not heard from Lumsden since he went to France; b) writes about the great need of missionaries (especially Irish missionaries who speak Gaelic), for the mission in the Highlands where there are between 3,000 and 4,000 Catholics; the letter notes that missionaries for the Lowlands are also needed; c) notes that Francis White and the schoolteacher [Alexander] Macalister are in great need and require help, and that he as prefect wants to receive precise orders on what to do to help them. He furthermore complains about the lack of help from the Scottish College in Paris; d) notes the mission itself is going well, but there are too many Catholics for the scarce amount of priests. Moreover, the king has instituted a tribunal to put order to the ecclesiastical situation, which causes fear among the people. He is said to be forwarding a letter from [Francis] White and one from the schoolteacher [Macalister]. Unsigned and dated the 28 March 1664. PF notes repeat the great need of help for Francis White described by the prefect, and add the possibility to accept earlier proposals of the archbishop of Armagh [Edmund O'Reilly] to send some of his Irish priests. The cardinals decide to provide for financial help for Francis White and to send the priests proposed by the archbishop of Armagh, after knowing from the procurator, however, how many should be sent and what characteristics they should have.

Letter from Alexander Macalister, schoolteacher in Scotland, to William Lesley, procurator of the Scottish mission in Rome. He writes that he has 24 pupils at the house of count MacDonnell in Glengarry. The students are from the following families: "Macdonaldi, Cameroni, Mackmartini, Fraserij, Scotti, Stuardi, Makiuerij" [MacDonnell, Cameron, MacMartin, Fraser, Scott, Stuart and MacIver]; all but one have converted to Catholicism. Macalister adds that he is in great need of books. Winster has promised to have the necessary books sent from London, but Macalister is afraid that they will be seized. Its noted that some children have had to learn how to read from ‘heretic’ books. Macalister first taught on the Isle of Skye, but when the ministers noticed that he was Catholic and was converting his students, they banned him from the island. He never received any money from anyone, until he received 60 scudi from the prefect [Alexander] Winster, sent by PF. The letter dated 14 June 1665.

Letter from Francis White to PF. He writes to have received 25 scudi from William Lesley, sent to him by PF. He has served in the mission for 14 years (orginally sent by CM), and in this period at least 14 parishes have been converted to Catholicism; White notes that if he had had any companions, all parishes would have been converted. He describes the opposition of the Protestant ministers, the need for other priests (especially for his brother John White), the fact that he can only go to confession once a year (despite needing to say mass every day), the poverty in the mountains, and the difficult circumstances under which he has to live. The letter is dated 27 June 1665.

An account of the resource
Letter from Alexander Macalister to PF in which he explains that last year (before his conversion to Catholicism), he had a school on the Isle of Skye, where he taught at least 70 children of Protestant parents. When he converted to Catholicism, a large part of his students followed suit, and he was expelled by the ministers when they discovered this. When he asked Francis White for help, the latter gave him 24 students. He has never asked for money from the people there. He also underlines the fact that Francis White greatly needs other missionaries to help him fulfill his tasks. The letter signed and dated 27 June 1665.

Copy of a letter from John Walker to the procurator of the Scottish mission in Rome, William Lesley. He writes to have received a letter from the procurator. With this letter Walker wants to underline a few points made in his letter to PF so that Lesley can clarify these for PF. He has left this letter for PF open, so that Lesley can first read it himself. The most important issues are: a) the enormous need of books; b) the achievements of Francis White in the Highlands; and c)the problem of housing within Scotland (particularly in Edinburgh), and outside Scotland, regarding establishing a place where missionaries can retire. He also notes that he has sent a letter to Patrizio Coneo, which will tell Lesley more about the mission. The original letter is dated 16 July 1665.

Letter from the prefect of the Scottish mission Alexander Winster, to its procurator in Rome, William Lesley. Winster explains that he had neither written nor sent any letters to date, for fear that his letters would be opened and read, due to the ongoing war between England and the Netherlands. He writes about the current situation of the mission, among which the fact that he now is the only missionary in Edinburgh, since also the Jesuits left that city. He has several requests: a) a house for the Scottish missionaries in a Catholic country to retire in case of illness or old age; b) more missionaries to be sent to the Scottish mission; and c) money to buy books. He also asks if PF could arrange that John White, brother of the only missionary working in the Highlands at that moment [Francis White] be sent to the same mission. He asks what to do with money sent from PF which he has yet to spend. Letter signed and dated 19 July 1665.

Description
An account of the resource
Letter from Alexander Winster, prefect of the Scottish mission, to PF. Winster explains that he had neither written nor sent any letters to date, for fear that his letters would be opened and read, due to the ongoing war between England and the Netherlands. Moreover he waited for letters from the other missionaries to arrive, which they now had (except for one), and that he is now forwarding them to PF. Winster writes about his current work in Edinburgh, and that many Catholics from the whole reign come to this city for the Parliament and the judges. On feast days he sometimes needs to administer the sacraments to 20 or 30 Catholics, and to say mass twice, since otherwise the great number of people might rise suspicions; he also notes that helping the sick is a difficult task, because he is the only priest in the city, and it is very dangerous. He describes the danger of conversion and of other activities that go against the local penal laws. In the Highlands however, the "harvest" is big, but there are too few "workers," namely Francis White alone; others do not speak the language. Winster notes that if it were not for the Jesuits present in larger numbers, it would be impossible to continue the work of the mission. Therefore he asks for other missionaries, especially for 'Joannes Blanchs' [John White] who would be very apt for the mission. He complains about the fact that no missionaries have come from the Scottish colleges in Europe, and that there is no place where the missionaries can retire, which causes them to leave the mission, as has already happened with Alexander Leith and Thomas Lumsden. He also asks for books. The letter is signed and dated 21 July (old style, thus 31 July 1665), and was discussed on 9 November 1665.

An account of the resource
Letter from Francis White to [William Lesley?]. He writes that he has only received the letter from [William Lesley?] in June, as [Alexander] Winster did not want to risk forwarding it, since he did not know where White was. He describes problems between himself and a Dominican, and also with a protestant minister. He writes about the fact that he has so much to do in such difficult circumstances that were he to remain without help, he would have to leave the Highlands. He is grateful, however, for the provision, and for the schoolteacher. White notes that he would like to have another teacher, since on the islands there is a protestant teacher. He asks [William Lesley?] to excuse Eugenio Macalastrio [Alexander Macalister] for not having written the names of the schoolchildren and their parents [actually, Macalister did at least mention family names in his letter to Lesley, see APF SOCG 308, 224r-225v (database item 336)], because they fear that these will be communicated to the court, were these letters to be intercepted. He asks if it could be ordered that his brother Giouanni Bianchi [John White] be sent to help him. He would also need other priests, but they have to be excellent due to Highlanders viewing priests as saints on earth. He writes that the Highlands and islands could soon be Catholic, if only there were enough missionaries. Therefore he urges [William Lesley?] to see to the appointment of new missionaries. The letter is dated 14 June 1665.

Additional comments
There is no signature nor address on this document. However, we can be sure that it is written by Francis White, since he refers to John White as his brother. It is probably addressed to William Lesley, since the (copies of) other letters addressed to him use the exact same format.

Description
An account of the resource
Letter from Alexander Winster, prefect of the Scottish mission, to PF. Winster writes about the lack of priests, as in Scotland there are only four secular priests and one teacher. The missionaries are: John Walker, who has been in Aberdeen and the surrounding area for four years, but has currently been called to Edinburgh; Gilbert Gray who has been frequenting Buchan and Strathbogie, and Francis White who has remained in the Hebrides and in the northern mountains, serving the over 2,000 Catholics there alone. Seven years before there had been four priests in the Highlands and Hebrides, but currently no other missionary speaks Gaelic. Winster states that he has often asked for other Irish priests, especially for John White (who is now in Paris and would not refuse to work with his brother), but also others which the nuncio might propose. He complains about the fact that there are so few Scottish missionaries, since many have died or gone back to France; only Gilbert Gray has stayed. PF summary on f. 279v states that the archbishop of Armagh has already been asked for Irish priests. PF has also asked the nuncio in France to talk with CM about letting "il Bianchi" [John White] go to the Highland mission, but they answered that they would find someone else because John White is teaching; to date, they have not done so. PF meeting of 20 September 1666 decides that John White should be sent, and that the nuncio should be written to stating he must give him 30 scudi as viatcum. The nuncio is also asked to not listen anymore to the excuses of the Fathers of CM, since they never proposed any other priest, as they had promised to do. White should be declared missionary in the Highlands, under the prefecture of Alexander Winster, with the same provision as the other missionaries there have. The letter dated 15 March 1666.

An account of the resource
Translation of a letter from Alexander Winster to William Lesley. Winster states to have only recently (at the beginning of the month) received the letter and package sent by William Lesley, more than eight or ten months before. They had arrived in Scotland three or four months earlier, but since he has been traveling he did not see them until now. He reports on the situation in Scotland, on the continuing need in the Highlands, on the financial situation of the schoolteacher, the financial situation of the mission in general, the great need of books for the school (as well as for ordinary Catholics), the fact that Giouanni Iruino [John Irvin] has not yet arrived from France, and that another missionary who arrived recently, has already passed away. He furthermore writes about the problem of dividing the missionaries equally over the country (which he suggests PF might set up some rules about), the importance of the Huntly family and the usefulness of Winster's work among them. He also asks if PF or even William Lesley could write a letter to the young and devout Marquis of Huntly, to encourage him to persevere in the Catholic faith. Lastly he writes that the family and friends of William Lesley are doing well. The letter dated 12 November 1666.

Description
An account of the resource
Copy of a letter from Francis White [to William Lesley?]. He writes that he has visited [Alexander] Winster, whom he had not seen for four years. He went a very long way in order to ask Winster for the things needed for his very poor mission. Winster himself came to see White the previous autumn [1666] but did not find him, as White was far away on the islands and had fallen ill. White writes that whilst Winster had assisted him financially, the need for more missionaries is even more urgent than before. The promised help has not yet arrived, but the vastness of the area and the amount of converts, would provide enough work for twelve priests. Missionaries are also needed because, while there is great faith in God in this region, the people know nothing about the Catholic faith. They abhor the Protestant ministers, but there are no Catholic priests to replace them. White also writes that the superior [René Alméras] of his brother [John White] will send the latter to Scotland, only if [William Lesley] convinces the PF to write to Alméras and the nuncio to France on this matter. White furthermore asks that [William Lesley] convince PF to send money for books and approximately one thousand rosaries and other similar things. The letter is dated 29 April 1667, but it was received in Rome in 1668.
Date received 1668
Additional comments
Although the addressee is not mentioned explicitly, it is very likely to be William Lesley. This is because Francis White talks about the addressee's task of convincing PF of certain needs of the Scottish mission. This was precisely the task of the procurator of that mission in Rome, namely William Lesley.

Description
An account of the resource
Copy of a letter from Graio [Gilbert Gray] to [William] Lesley. He writes to the procurator that Lesley, on his departure, urged him to write frequently, as he often complained that the other missionaries did not write often enough. Gray, however, states that he has written frequently, as has the prefect, but both have received very few answers in return. Therefore they are wondering whether their efforts please PF or not. In the procurators' last letter, it also seems as if something was not satisfying him. Gray asks him to be more clear about what he is doing wrong, since this he has not been explicit. Lastly, he writes that a list has been made of all Catholics in the region, therefore they fear persecution. The letter dated 28 December 1667.
