Letter from PF to CM, Rome, 1662-11-27
Madagascar
Letter from PF to CM. PF is delighted to announce that the missionaries proposed by CM Superior General [René Alméras] have been accepted. With this letter, they send the necessary faculties and patents, and praise the piety of the missionaries who are about to undertake such a dangerous mission. They also grant the missionaries the faculty to administer confessions, on the ship that will bring them to the mission. They do not grant the dispensation to eat meat, nor the faculty to do anything in the countries outside their mission. However, if they (whilst travelling to Madagascar), pass any countries were they can be of use, they are allowed to help the people. The other issues are refered to the Holy Office.

Letter from PF to Car'le Antonio [Antonio Barberini Jr.]. CM superior general [René Alméras] informed PF about the great need for missionaries in Madagscar, as most have died. Due to these circumstances, Giacomo della Fossa [Jacques de La Fosse], Robert Menan, Claudio de la Salle [Claude de La Salle], Massimiliano Fran'co Caveron [Maximilien François Cuvron] and Michele Manie [Michel Manie] have been asked to be sent to the mission. De La Fosse should be made prefect in the case that Nicolò Estienne [Nicolas Etienne] has died. They ask Anotnio Barberini Jr. to decide whether the proposed candidates are suitable for the mission.

Letter from the nuncio to France, Celio Piccolomini, to the PF prefect [Antonio Barberini jr.], 1661-12-29, Paris
Madagascar
Letter from the nuncio to France, Celio Piccolomini to PF, stating that he will talk to the Marshal de la Meilleraye, as the prefect has ordered in his letter dated the 15 October. The nuncio will also explain to him why PF is not willing to appoint a bishop in partibus. Since the person who was the Marshal's first choice already died, the nuncio hopes that he will readily except that things will be done as they have been in the past [i.e. that a vicar apostolic will be appointed instead of a bishop].

Capuchins
Minutes of the general meeting of PF, held on 12 July 1661, during which a petition by Marshal de La Meilleraye was discussed. He had previously asked for a bishop for Madagascar, but PF responded that the circumstances there did not allow for it. Instead PF proposed to send a titular bishop with faculties of vicar apostolic. For this function Marshal now proposes three Capuchin candidates. The secretary however mentions that the mission has always been in the hands of CM, and that it would discourage them if a Capuchin would be appointed. The cardinals decide that another candidate should be chosen.

Capuchins
Letter from the nuncio to France, Celio Piccolomini to PF, in which he states that since PF has agreed to the request sent by Marshal de La Meilleraye to appoint a bishop for Madagascar on 14 June 1660, Marshal has now proposed three candidates, all of them Capuchin missionaries. Whereas in his former letter Marshal had promised to provide some financial support, this time he made no mention of it; the nuncio promises to talk to him about this aspect. On f. 21r the names of the three Capuchins are mentioned: "Josephus de Mortais, Valerianus de Montmiral, Hubertus de Poictiers Capucinus." PF minutes on f. 22v indicate that PF secretary, Mario Alberizzi, does not think its legitimate to appoint a Capuchin bishop since CM priests had always served that mission, and such a decision would discourage them. PF decides that something else should be proposed.

Petition on behalf of Vincent de Paul asking to appoint Toussaint Bourdaise, as the new prefect of the Madagascar mission, following the death of the previous prefect, Charles Nacquart. The petition mentions that Bourdaise had already been declared apostolic missionary, and for several years, had applied himself with good results to the spiritual aid of the people in Madagascar. A second paragraph (written in a different handwriting) adds another request: should Toussaint Bourdaise fall prey to some accident and die, the cardinals of PF are asked to allow that a new prefect be nominated by Vincent de Paul, from among the missionaries of CM who are already on the island (subject to approval by the nuncio to France). Minutes of PF general meeting of 8 November 1650 discussing among other issues, a petition on behalf of the superior of the Discalced Carmelites regarding the Madagascar mission. In response, the cardinals decided: 1) to send a letter with the patents and ask the Holy Office for the faculties; 2) with regard to the travel, PF would provide up to 100 scudi, as already decided some months before (see APF ACTA 19, 344r, 346r-v, database item 463), as well as 60 scudi as provision; and 3) for the furnishings, they have to apply elsewhere.

Petitions for missionary patents
Petition on behalf of Claude Dufour requesting PF to accept him as a member of CM, despite his earlier statement that he wanted to become member of a religious order. Even though CM is not a religious order, they also have vows of poverty, chastity, obedience, and stability in the same congregation. He would like to stay with CM and serve God by converting infidels on the island of St. Lawrence (Madagascar).
Date discussed [1656-02-03]

The year is from PF filing system, not the petition itself.
