Petition on behalf of the missionaries of Madagascar. In the past few months PF had appointed Michel Manié as prefect of the Madagascar mission. But together with the arrival of news about the death of the previous prefect (Nicolas Etienne), and Manié’s illness, the cardinals are asked to appoint François Cuvron [or Cuveron] as prefect or vice prefect of the Madagascar mission (vice prefect in case Manié is still alive). Petition discussed in PF general congregation of 20 December 1666; the cardinals decided not to appoint another prefect.

Description
An account of the resource
Petition on behalf of CM missionaries in Madagascar, asking for solutions to the spiritual needs encountered during the journey to Madagascar. They ask: a) if they may administer sacraments onboard ships other than the one which they initially boarded (for example, if they have to change ship because of a shipwreck), and exempt people on the ship from fasting during Lent, when there are no other priests on board; b) if they may administer sacraments not within the territory of their mission, providing there are no other priests present. Or if this is not allowed, they have permission to marry two people when there is no bishop, parish priest or missionary in that place; c) if they may perform baptisms in places where there is no parish church nor any baptismal font; d) if they may hear the confession of people who have not confessed for years and give them absolution, even if they can only communicate through signs; e) if the confessor is obliged to confirm if soldiers who come to confession are fighting a just war, and if not, if he should refuse absolution. During their meeting of 27 November 1662 the cardinals decide the following agree to the appointments requested by Alméras. In response to the other requests, they decide: 1) to give their consent for the requested faculties, i.e. to administer the sacraments on other ships than the one they initially boarderd, but only when absolutely necessary; however, the ability to exempt people on the ship from fasting during Lent and other penitences is not considered beneficial by the cardinals; and 2) regarding the second request (concerning the administration of sacraments outside the territory of their own mission), the missionaries should use their own judgment in these cases. Regarding the other issues (c to e), the cardinals decide that these should be handled by the Holy Office.

An account of the resource
Petition on behalf of Fra Alberto Di San Michele (a Discalced Carmelite), requesting a renewal of his patent (as prefect of the mission), and a subsidy from PF to cover travel and initial expenses in Madagascar. He states that he has not been able to secure the passage to the island as of yet, because he has to pay for the journey; the ship's captain (a heretic), although willing to take them, will not let them travel for free. A PF note on 122v shows that at the meeting of 25 April 1650, the cardinals decided to ask the nuncio to negotiate the travel stipend with the missionaries, and to make sure the amount would not go over 100 scudi.
Date discussed 1650 - 04-25
Additional comments
A copy of the 1649 royal patent in favor of the mission is attached (f. 120r-v, database item 170).
In other letters it becomes clear that Di San Michele left Paris without permission, it is therefore likely that he was in Paris at this time. See for example: APF SOCG 248, 36r, 41v (database item 168).

Petition on behalf of Discalced Carmelite Alberto Di San Michele [Albert de Saint Michel?] prefect of the mission to Madagascar, and his companions, requesting a renewal of his patent (as prefect of the mission) and a subsidy from PF to cover travel and initial expenses in Madagascar. He states that he has not been able to secure the passage to the island yet, because he has to pay for the journey, and although willing to take them, the ship's captain (a heretic), will not let them travel for free. In support of his request, he references PF decree establishing the mission (26 November 1647) and a letter from late Monsignor Ingoli to the nuncio in France (27 March 1649).
Additional comments
The year is from PF filing system, not the petition itself.
In other letters it becomes clear that Alberto Di San Michele [Albert de Saint Michel?] left Paris without permission, therefore its likely he was in Paris. See for example: 'APF SOCG 248, 36r, 41v (database item 168).

An account of the resource
Petition on behalf of Vincent de Paul to PF, in which he reports that the last ship going to Madagasca has been put to sea, and that one of the four missionaries destined for the Madagascar mission could not make the trip. Vincent de Paul replaced him with Pierre Turpin, and therefore proposes that he be declared an apostolic missionary. The petition is followed by a few lines signed by cardinal Nicolò Guidi di Bagno which attest to his abilities. Discussed in PF general meeting of 27 May 1659. The cardinals agree to the proposal.

Description
An account of the resource
Petition on behalf of Vincent de Paul asking to appoint Toussaint Bourdaise, as the new prefect of the Madagascar mission, following the death of the previous prefect, Charles Nacquart. The petition mentions that Bourdaise had already been declared apostolic missionary, and for several years, had applied himself with good results to the spiritual aid of the people in Madagascar. A second paragraph (written in a different handwriting) adds another request: should Toussaint Bourdaise fall prey to some accident and die, the cardinals of PF are asked to allow that a new prefect be nominated by Vincent de Paul, from among the missionaries of CM who are already on the island (subject to approval by the nuncio to France). PF notes mention that the cardinals approved the request. The petition is undated and unsigned.

Petition on behalf of Vincent de Paul. He asks that, since a ship will depart for Madagascar in the spring, would PF grant missionary faculties to two Vincentians: Claude Dufour and François Mousnier. He also ask that other priests of CM (which he did not choose as of yet), may receive the same faculties. In that case, he suggests the nuncio judge whether they are suitable or not for the mission.
Additional comments
Date based on the years that Dufour was proposed for the Madagascar mission, which was in 1550. This date is unknown for Mousnier. It might be some years later though, as Dufour went to Madagascar in 1656 and Mousnier in 1654.

Petition on behalf of Vincent de Paul. He asks that PF send the usual missionary faculties for four priests who will go to the Madagascar mission, to join Charles Nacquart; Nacquart's companion Nicolas Gondrée died [in May 1649] six months after their arrival, leaving him alone on the mission. He furthermore asks that the names be left blank so that he can think about whom to send. The nuncio can then approve these four, and one among them can be appointed prefect in case Charles Nacquart also dies.

Description
An account of the resource
Petition on behalf of Vincent de Paul asking PF to grant full missionary patents to Toussaint Bourdaise, who had been sent to Madagascar a few years before as companion for Jean-François Mousnier, (who in turn had been named apostolic missionary by PF on 10 February 1653). Vincent de Paul also asks that Mousnier be declared prefect of the Madagascar mission, since he has just received news of the previous prefect's death (Charles Nacquart). The nuncio to France also joins a letter recommending Mousnier.

Description
An account of the resource
Petition on behalf of René Alméras. Alméras writes that there are not enough priests left in Madagasca since Nicolas Etienne, the previous prefect, has been killed, another missionary has left the island and a third has drowned. He therefore asks for the appointment of the following new missionaries: Giacomo [Jacques] Henir, Giouanni [Jean] le Bourgeois, Andrea l’Escuier [André Lescuyer], and Tussano [Toussaint] Piequelin. He also requests the appointment of Maximilien Michel Maniè as prefect and François Cuveron [or Cuvron] as vice prefect of the same mission, and in the event of either of their deaths, Ignace Roguet. PF note of the meeting on 20 September 1666 show that the cardinals agreed to the petition, and that the faculties of prefect should be requested at the Holy Office. Afterwhich, they should be sent to the nuncio in Paris, who will then give them to the priests, once they have been judged capable to operate in the mission.

Petition on behalf of René Alméras to PF, in which he asks for the appointment of Marin Ignace Roguet as prefect for the Madagascar mission, since the two previous prefects Nicolas Etienne and Michel Maniè have since both died. He also asks for the confirmation of status of apostolic missionaries for Louis Bourot and Michel Monmasson, who were declared apostolic missionaries by PF in 1664 for seven years. PF notes on 73v indicate that the cardinals agreed on both issues.

An account of the resource
Petition on behalf of René Alméras to PF, mentioning the six missionaries who had been recently accepted by PF for the island of Madagascar. The petition mentions that the ships have not yet set sail. Taking advantage of the delay, Alméras would like to add two more names to the list: Michel Monmasson and Claude Bernard Vegrat, both priests of CM; PF is requested to declare them apostolic missionaries to Madagascar, for the spiritual aid of the local population. The matter was assigned to Cardinal Brancacci (first name written and then scratched was Pallotto) and discussed in PF general congregation of 7 October 1664. PF note (by Pro-secretary Manfronus) shows that the request was approved and forwarded to the Holy Office for the faculties, which should be sent [to the nuncio to France].
Date discussed 1664-10-07
Additional comments
The previous petition (database item 281), discussed by PF in September, actually listed seven names, one of which had been included in earlier petitions as well, which means that six of the names on the September petition were new and needed approval.

Description
An account of the resource
Petition on behalf of René Alméras asking PF to approve the dispatch of more missionaries to the island of Madagascar, on account of the "copious spiritual harvest" to be had there. He mentions that those already approved by PF had not left yet, due to (the merchants) trying to assemble several ships to send over together. The names of those intended to join the mission are: Pietro Turpino [Pierre Turpin], Massimiliano Francesco Cuuron [Maximilien François Cuvron or Cuveron], Pietro Joüery [Pierre Jouery], and Giouanni Gueroult [Jean Guéroult], who are all priests of CM. PF is also requested to grant them the status of apostolic missionaries, including the customary faculties that will be conferred to them by the prefect of the mission, as already declared by PF; the petition mentions that the additions will not cause any "temporal burden" to PF. The notes on 37v show that: a) Cardinal Brancacci was assigned to the matter; and b) that the request was approved by PF on 5 June 1663.
