Description
An account of the resource
Letter from Vincent de Paul to PF, in which he discusses the conversation he had with one of the captains, who was due to leave for Madagascar. According to the captain, communication with the island has been interrupted and is not likely to be resumed any time soon, because of current situation in France; half of the merchants involved with Madagascar have already left the island for Paris, and the other half are worried about the financial cost of leaving. Vincent de Paul is concerned about the one Vincentian priest who has been on the island for three years, and whom they have not heard any news from (he is referring to Charles Nacquart, who at the time of writing, had already died). Vincent du Paul notes the possibility of passage on a Dutch ship, since the Dutch hold a nearby island, called St. Maurice [Mauritius]. The passage from the Dutch bases to the French ones would, however be difficult, both because of the geography of the islands and because of the rivalry between the Dutch and the French. If Vincent de Paul finds another way to reach Madagascar he will let PF know. The letter dated 16 August 1652.

The nuncio to France, Nicolò Guidi di Bagno, recommends Jean-François Mousnier and Toussaint Bourdaise for the Madagascar mission. The nuncio states that he approved and gave his blessing to the two at the end of the previous year, upon their departure, which could not be delayed on account of the ship being ready to set sail. He (Di Bagno) is now requesting PF to send the appropriate faculties for the two missionaries, on the basis of Vincent de Paul's recommendations, and his own knowledge of the qualities of the members of CM.

Description
An account of the resource
Petition on behalf of Vincent de Paul requesting permission to send three additional missionaries to Madagascar, namely: Claude Dufour, Nicolas Prevost, and François Feydin, seeing that a ship is ready to leave for the island. Vincent de Paul also requests that PF allow that the examination and approval of future missionaries for Madagascar, to be carried out by the nuncio, considering that the precipitous departure of the ship might not leave Vincent de Paul enough time to let PF know their names in advance; he (Vincent de Paul) also requested that the appropriate faculties be sent from Rome afterward.

Petition on behalf of Vincent de Paul asking PF to grant full missionary patents to Toussaint Bourdaise, who had been sent to Madagascar a few years before as companion for Jean-François Mousnier, (who in turn had been named apostolic missionary by PF on 10 February 1653). Vincent de Paul also asks that Mousnier be declared prefect of the Madagascar mission, since he has just received news of the previous prefect's death (Charles Nacquart). The nuncio to France also joins a letter recommending Mousnier.

Description
An account of the resource
Petition on behalf of Vincent de Paul to PF, in which he reports that the last ship going to Madagasca has been put to sea, and that one of the four missionaries destined for the Madagascar mission could not make the trip. Vincent de Paul replaced him with Pierre Turpin, and therefore proposes that he be declared an apostolic missionary. The petition is followed by a few lines signed by cardinal Nicolò Guidi di Bagno which attest to his abilities. Discussed in PF general meeting of 27 May 1659. The cardinals agree to the proposal.

Description
An account of the resource
Translation (from French) of a report on Madagascar, describing its size and location. It furthermore describes that many CM priests have worked there, converting more than 5,000 Christians. The report states that Marshal de La Meilleraye is expanding his control over the island of Madagascar, and he asks for the appointment of a bishop for the great number of priests who will be needed for the conversion of the island. He promises to provide financially for this bishop and for the priests who will follow him. PF general meeting of 6 September 1660 agreed the appointment of a bishop in partibus with the faculties of apostolic vicar; the pope approved this decision on 22 September 1660.
Date discussed 1660-09-06; approved by pope on 1661-09-22.
Additional comments
The letter is undated, but another document suggests that it was written on 14 June 1660. See APF SOCG 252, 20r, 21r, 22v (database item 271).
