Description
An account of the resource
Minutes of PF general meeting of 1 October 1658 discussing among other issues, a letter from the archbishop of Tuam. He writes about the miserable state of the church in Ireland, due to constant persecutions. Nevertheless, in the province of Connacht there are 150 secular priests serving the people, despite living in woods and in caves; the same is true for the other provinces and for the regular priests, although the Franciscans state that they are the only ones doing such things. The archbishop complains that some Minor Observant priests go wandering about without obeying the bishops; he therefore asks that they be recalled to their convent. Thirdly he asks whether PF can do something (or at least give advice), regarding the oath of abjuration introduced by Cromwell. Lastly, he recommends to the nuncio in Cologne, the Irish priests who go from Flanders to Frankfurt to serve the Catholics in the country. The cardinals decide to wait for the report sent by the archbishop of Armagh, and to urge the latter to send it as soon as possible. His letter should be discussed during the next PF meeting on Ireland.

Description
An account of the resource
Copy of a letter from PF to the nuncio to France, Celio Piccolomini, stating that the pope believes it necessary to send one or two apostolic visitors to Ireland and Scotland. It cannot be a member of a religious order, because the different orders mistrust one another. It should therefore be a French secular priest who knows both languages. On being asked by Cardinal De Bagni for a candidate, Vincent de Paul acknowledged that it would be difficult to find one who knows both languages, therefore he suggested that the visitor be accompanied by two laymen, one speaking each language. In this letter, however, the pope orders the nuncio to talk again with Vincent de Paul about the issue. The nuncio should also look for other candidates outside CM, because the Vincentians (although secular priests), are not wholly exempt from the problems that plague religious orders. If the nuncio cannot find one, he should accept Vincent de Paul's offer, after having first ascertained that the candidate is a good, trustworthy person, who speaks both languages. If he does not succeed, a solution could be to send two visitors, one to each country.

Description
An account of the resource
Letter from an unknown author (the signature is illegible) to [Luigi Capponi?] in which he mentions the pope's decision to distribute areas of Ireland, among PF cardinals. Therefore, the writer of the letter aks PF to confirm the decision. He moreover asks for the approval of certain candidates for different ecclesiastical posts in Ireland. The orders of the candidates are also taken into account, as there might be too many Franciscans, which upsets the Dominicans and Cistercians. The list of candidates with their orders and the cardinals responsible for each respective candidate follows. At the end of the letter, there is also a list of the amount of dioceses per order.
Date discussed: 1647-01-23
Additional comments
From two other documents it becomes clear that this was made by the Assessor of the Holy Office and that it was sent to Luigi Capponi, see: APF ACTA 17, 303r, 304r-305v, issue 4 (database item 148) and APF SOCG 145, 180r-184v (database item 164).

An account of the resource
Minutes of PF general meeting discussing the petition to nominate a priest for the metropolitan church of Tuam; this is a good example of the administrative route of such a petition. PF forwarded the issue to a congregazione particolare (special meeting), which does not seem to have taken place; the relevant decision was taken in a general meeting, the following year, as seen in database item 148.

An account of the resource
Minutes of PF general meeting mentioning, among other things, that a letter should be written to Vincent de Paul requesting him to select somebody from among the Irish priests of his congregation, in order to be sent to Ireland to instruct priests in "ecclesiastical rites and other necessary things for the divine cult and the salvation of souls." This is essentially a repetition of a similar request from February 1645. Referred by Cardinal Pamphylius. See attached file for a list of cardinals present.
