Description
An account of the resource
Copy of a letter from PF to the nuncio to France, Celio Piccolomini, in which PF asks the nuncio for his judgment on the following issue. The "Preti della dottrina Xp'na" [the priests of the Christian doctrine] have asked to be allowed faculties, in order to successfully exercise their ministry in dioceses where heresy is prevailing. Since granting these faculties could be a cause of both confusion and trouble (between these priests and the members of the CM), the nuncio should therefore decide whether it is a good idea to give them the faculties, and if so on which conditions. It is noted that the nuncio has previously granted similar faculties to the priests of Valognes, which led to a group gathering around the abbot of Luthumier). The letter dated 21 March 1658.

An account of the resource
Minutes of PF general meeting of 18 February 1658 discussing among other issues, a letter about the great rise of pious initiatives in France, by a certain Du Plessis. He writes about several successes: how Jansenism is being fought, that there are French missions in the Levant, on the British Isles, in America and Canada, on the Barbary Coast, and in the regions of Picardy and Champagne. Parishes are flourishing, as does the "charity of the Ladies" [the Ladies of Charity?]. Small companies grow, people are trying to abolish duels and swearing. The much desired general hospital has been established, and the poor are being cared for in Paris. The cardinals decide to ask more information about the content and authority of the letter.

Minutes of PF general meeting of 30 July 1657 discussing among other matters, the issue regarding the requests for missionary faculties by the abbot of Luthumier and his missionaries. The cardinals had previously decided to ask Cardinal Di Bagno whether the abbot and his missionaries had to swear an oath in front of the nuncio, before receiving the faculties. De Bagni thinks that is a good solution, and the cardinals agree.

Minutes of PF general meeting of 10 July 1657 discussing among other issues, a question regarding the abbot of Luthumier and several missionaries of the institute that he founded. PF had previously decided that they should receive missionary faculties, however, now [PF secretary Mario Alberizzi] needs to know whether they will have to swear in front of the nuncio that they will remain loyal to PF. Alberizzi also asks whether it is enough to put a condition in the faculties, stating that they will not be granted permission to utilise them, if they do not show obedience to PF. The cardinals decided to leave this issue to the judgment of Cardinal Di Bagno.

Minutes of PF general meeting of 4 June 1657 discussing among other issues, a letter from the nuncio to France. He writes that the abbot of Luthumier has given a certain amount of money to the foundation, College for Priests of the Mission ("Preti della Mission") in the city of Valognes, and also for the sustenance of 12 missionaries; its noted that the bishop has given his consent to the foundation. Vincent de Paul believes that it is better for similar congregations to distinguish themselves by particular names, in order to make it easier to understand which is being discussed. The cardinals decided to grant the faculties, with a mention that they would have to remain subordinate to PF.

PF (renewed) examination of request for missionary faculties by Pierre Gallais, CM superior in Sedan, because of additional information (sent by Gallais) according to which the mission in Sedan depends on the queen of France. PF decides that Cardinal Grimaldo get involved in this matter and that a letter be written to the nuncio to France, requesting more information on the usefulness of the mission in Sedan. Faculties should be granted to Gallais and his companions, as long as the main Superior of CM (Vincent de Paul, mentioned by name in the document) approves, and the nuncio expresses his support.
