Conversion
Copy of a part of a letter from Francis White to the prefect of the Scottish mission, Alexander Winster. The missionary writes that he is exhausted from the work he has to do. White states that it was hard even when there were still four other priests to help him, but now it is almost impossible. Especially because he converted so many, and the number of people inclined to receive instruction, and the sacraments is increasing every day. Against his wishes, he gave up conversions because he can hardly assist those he already converted every two years. He is in great need of help from "the many friends in Rome" and asks the prefect to help. The copy is dated 13 March 1664.

Letter from PF to Alessandro Winstero [Alexander Winster]. PF has discussed many times the need for missionaries in Scotland, especially in the Highlands. They speak a different language in the Highlands to that in the Lowlands; it is this reason why it is hard to find missionaries. Bianchi [John White] will now travel to Scotland as missionary. CM priests (among whom he currently lives), are reluctant to let him go, but because of the sufferings of Christianity, they have decided to let him travel to Scotland. They have given John White the orders to directly go to the mission, and have immediately given him the required travel money. When Winster makes a patent for John White under his prefecture, he can be sent to the place that is most desperate for help.

Letter from PF to Alexander Winster. PF will take care of the money needed to build the house at Dieppe. The schoolmasters have been given a provision of 300 scuta a year, so that they do not have to ask the parents of the children for donations. PF will also spend 600 scuta on books for the mission, at least for those of Belarminus and Beccanus. If there is money left it should be used for the mission in the mountains. The letter concludes by stating it is important to take care of the two Franciscan priests from Ireland.

Letter from PF to Alessandrus Winsterus [Alexander Winster]. PF deems the Catholics in the mountains areas (including those that have been Catholic for a very long time, and those recently converted), to be worthy of their paternal caring, due to the rough times that they have expierenced. Sending any priests other than Irish to this area would be useless, as they would not speak the language. That is why they have sent Marcus and Franc'cu Macdaniel [Mark and Francis MacDannell], who are both Franciscans as missionaries. They are under the rule of the prefecture of Winster, and have been granted the usual faculties, subsidies and provision. They want Winster to send them to the place that has the greatest need for priests.
