Letter from the PF secretary [Francesco Ravizza] to the nuncio to France [Fabrizio Spada], 1674-12-18, Rome

Jesuits
Letter from PF secretary [Francesco Ravizza] to the nuncio to France [Fabrizio Spada], stating that he should find a candidate who can become the general superior of both the secular, and the regular priests in the Scottish mission. This superior general is necessary, as there are often discords between the regular and secular priests, and PF does not really know what the missionaries are doing: in their writings some things are never mentioned or are somewhat distorted. The letter dated 19 February 1675.

Petitions for faculties
Copy of a letter from the secretary of PF to the nuncio to France, Francesco Nerli. The PF secretary [Federico Baldeschi] writes that he gave a package to the procurator of the Scottish mission [William Lesley], with the faculties for the new prefect and for Alexander Lesley. The procurator dared to take out the patents, which was possibly in order to send them directly to Scotland instead of via the nuncio in France; instead they were separated from the letter to the nuncio. The secretary does not know what to think about this incident, but he will keep it in mind. The letter dated 18 October 1672.

Tunis
Letter from Antonio Di Serauezza to the nuncio to France, Pietro Bargellini. It has been four months since he left Tunis. He writes to inform the nuncio about the tyranny and cruelty of the consul [Jean Ambrozin], who has driven away two vicar apostolics because they asked him to give back the money that he took from the church. They hoped he would stop living a dishonest life, which not only shocked the Christians but also the Turks (as one can learn from the statements written by the merchants and slaves, that he had sent to the nuncio). He is afraid though that the nuncio has not received the letters, because he never got an answer. He sent his letters to the nuncio through Calaman (a merchant), and to Monsu del Ormo, who would give them to both the nuncio and the duchess of Agaglion, who would then inform the queen. As he did not receive any response, he decided to go to Monsu Prata, because he knew the consulate of Marseille. They told him that if he would go to Paris, Colbert would make sure that he would not get an audience, since he received letters from the consul in Tunis. The consul himself eventually got hold of the letters that the merchants wrote against him. He called all the merchants to the consulate and threathened to give them 500 lashes and enslave them, if they did not drop their charges against him. He would never be able to abuse his power and to remain in his position, if it were not for the protection of Colbert. In order for Di Seravezza to return to Tunis, he wants Antonio Crocet, a Minor Observant, commissary of Terra Santa and an agent of PF in Marseille, to make the consul pay back the money, and to remove him from the position. The consul also told other rennegades that when he was no longer consul, he was planning on converting. Monsu Prat informs all of this to Colbert, who defends himself by saying that he trusts the letters of the consul, which despite being very well written, are actually full of lies. The consul should work as chaplain (as all consuls used to do), and he should also pay back the goods he took. If he does not, then Prata should be forced to pay it back. He writes that the answer to his letter should be adressed to Luigi Calaman.
Date discussed: 1670-11-10

Letter from PF to the nuncio to France Card'l Roberti [Carlo Roberti de' Vittori]. The procurator general of the Congregation of the Discalded Augustinians of France, informed PF about the lack of financial aid for the mission in Barbary; the mission used to be supported by a French merchant, but since he died, they lost their income. There is however another French merchant who has offered to pay for the expenses of the mission. They ask for more missionaries to be sent to the mission, and for one of them to be given the faculties of prefect of the mission. PF (wanting to help in the spiritual needs of these regions), asks de' Vittori to inform them about the suitability of the proposed candidates, and for more information regarding the proposal of the merchant.

Letter from PF to the nuncio to France, Carlo Roberti de' Vittori. PF has come to the understanding that Gio' LeVacher [Jean Le Vacher] has returned to Paris, leaving Tunis (where he used to be vicar apostolic), and the poor slaves behind. As the Mercedarians and Trinitarians have also returned to their provinces, there are only a few slave priests left to administer the sacraments. PF is very upset about the fact that Le Vacher has left the mission so suddenly, and without giving any notice, or waiting for another priest to take his place. PF aks de' Vittori to order Le Vacher to return to Tunis. PF has always been satsified with Le Vacher and want him to return to his position. In the case that he refuses to return, CM Superior [René Alméras] should send another priest in his place as soon as possibile, in order not to leave the Catholics on their own.

PF requests that de' Vittori ask Gio Le Vacher [Jean Le Vacher], to inform them about the qualities of Constantino Maurudi Da Tunisi (an Orthodox priest). They want to know: a) what he has been doing lately; b) whose student he was; c) what he does for the patriach of Alexandria; d) where he stayed during his time in Cyprus and Egypt; e) if he has any goodwill towards the Catholic faith; f) what his behavior is and how he acts towards Catholics; g) if he deems it necessary to give Maurudi a companion to help him; and h) if he could maintain this companion without any extra financial support from PF. Letter from PF to the nuncio to France [Carlo Roberti de' Vittori]. The prefect of the mission of secular priests in Scotland [Alexander Winster] told PF about the current problem facing Catholics in the Highlands; they require a priest who could assist them in their spiritual needs, and would work together with the missionary in converting heretics. Winster proposed that they send Gio' Bianchi [John White], who is currently staying in Paris, to the mission. The prefect confirms that he is very talented, and also speaks Irish; language barriers was the reason why it took PF so long to find a missionary. Moreover John White is also very willing to work for the mission for which his brother is also working [Francis White]. PF asks de' Vittori to talk to CM superior [René Alméras], and convince him to let John White go to the mission. They really need John White for the mission as there is a big scarsity of priests, whereas someone else could easily take over his old task. PF asks de' Vittori to keep them informed about the latest developments, regarding this matter.

The "Preti della dottrina Xp'na" [the priests of the Christian doctrine] have asked to be allowed faculties, in order to successfully exercise their ministry in dioceses where heresy is prevailing. Since granting these faculties could be a cause of both confusion and trouble (between these priests and the members of the CM), the nuncio should therefore decide whether it is a good idea to give them the faculties, and if so on which conditions. It is noted that the nuncio has previously granted similar faculties to the priests of Valognes, which led to a group gathering around the abbot of Luthumier). The letter dated 21 March 1658.

Copy of a letter from PF to the nuncio to France, Celio Piccolomini, stating that the pope believes it necessary to send one or two apostolic visitors to Ireland and Scotland. It cannot be a member of a religious order, because the different orders mistrust one another. It should therefore be a French secular priest who knows both languages. On being asked by Cardinal De Bagni for a candidate, Vincent de Paul acknowledged that it would be difficult to find one who knows both languages, therefore he suggested that the visitor be accompanied by two laymen, one speaking each language. In this letter, however, the pope orders the nuncio to talk again with Vincent de Paul about the issue. The nuncio should also look for other candidates outside CM, because the Vincentians (although secular priests), are not wholly exempt from the problems that plague religious orders. If the nuncio cannot find one, he should accept Vincent de Paul's offer, after having first ascertained that the candidate is a good, trustworthy person, who speaks both languages. If he does not succeed, a solution could be to send two visitors, one to each country.
