Description
An account of the resource
Minutes of PF particular congregation (convened especially for discussion of articles regarding the alumni of the Propaganda Fide College) where it was also mentioned that the bishop of Babylon had not resided in his bishopric in years, but lived in France instead. The decision of the meeting was to add a clause to the endowing breve of the bishopric, stating that the bishop (be it the incumbent or any of his successors) could not use the revenue produced by the bishopric unless he resided there. A note on the margin, however, indicates that it was later decided that no such clause should be appended to the breve.

Minutes of PF general meeting discussing, among other issues, the bishopric of Babylon. As referred by Mr. Marco, the bishop of Baghdad [Babylon] has been absent from his residence in Aspaham and currently resides in France. PF decided to have a note sent to the nuncio, together with a copy of the foundational Breve for the Baghdad bishopric, in order that, according to the terms of the Breve and the articles of the Trent Council, the bishop resolve to go back to Persia as soon as possible. Otherwise, the penalties reserved by said Council and the apostolic laws for cases of absent bishops would have to be applied.

An account of the resource
Letters from the bishop of Babylon requesting dispensation of residence (in Persia), and from two doctors in Paris certifying that the bishop's health is not good, and that he cannot leave and reside in Persia because the trip is arduous, and the climate there is too hot, which might result in apoplexy. PF note indicates that PF cardinals agreed, as long as the bishop was ready to either renounce the bishopric or be replaced by a coadjutor or a suffragan.
Date discussed 1645-08-07

Description
An account of the resource
Minutes of PF general meeting discussing, among other issues, the bishopric of Babylon. As referred by Cardinal Spada, PF discusses the letters from Brother Bernard, bishop of Babylon, as well as the testimonies of two doctors from Paris, who attest to the bishop's infirmity and his frequent headaches, hearing and vision problems, based on which the two doctors conclude that the bishop cannot travel as far as Persia without putting his life in danger, nor can he stay there, on account of the lack of medical doctors and appropriate medicine. PF decided that: a) the bishop should either renounce the bishopric, or accept a coadjutor or a suffragan, so that the church does not remain without a shepherd; b) if the nuncio corroborates the information sent by the bishop, then it is likely that the pope will approve the bishop's request to remain in Paris to lead his pious college (mentioned in the bishop's letter), as long as the bishop sends a coadjutor or suffragan in his stead to Persia; and c) the present decree will be referred to the pope and the bishop will be advised of His Holiness' response.

Description
An account of the resource
Letter from the nuncio to France, Nicolò Guidi di Bagno, accompanying a note from the bishop of Babylon on the matter of his replacement. Among the three persons proposed - one Indian, one French, and one Portuguese - the bishop thinks the Portuguese would be best because he would be content with being a suffragan, as the bishop himself would not want a coadjutor (who would succeed him after death), because that would imperil his work on the seminary he started in Paris and dishearten the seminarists. The PF notes indicate that PF prefers the coadjutorship idea and would offer to the coadjutor 100 scudi/year, on top of the 100 scudi/year given by the bishop from his own revenue, until the death of the bishop, after which the coadjutor would get the entire 700 scudi/year that constitute the income of the bishopric of Babylon. PF designates Christophe Authier as a possible coadjutor of Babylon and bishop of Aspaham, and in case he refuses, the nuncio is instructed to entreat Authier to nominate one of his missionaries from Avignon who would be willing and able to reside in Persia.

Minutes of PF general meeting discussing, among other issues, the Babylon coadjutorship. In response to the letters sent by the nuncio to France and the bishop of Babylon, PF decided to offer the coadjutor position to Christophe Authier, with an annual provision of 100 scudi from the bishop himself and 100 scudi from PF, to be provided until the death of the bishop, after which Authier would receive the entire annual "mensa" (the revenue reserved for the personal subsistence of the bishop) of 700 scudi/year. If Authier declines, then the nuncio or the legate in Avignon (depending on Authier's location at the time) should ask him to nominate another candidate from among his missionaries in Avignon.

Description
An account of the resource
Five letters from the bishop of Babylon, Jean Duval, discussing his planned replacement at the bishopric. The bishop is seeking a 100-200 scudi pension from a parish benefice in France (for instance in Bretagne or in the bishopric of St. Paul of Lyon) to supplement the 400 scudi/year promissed by the queen. As for the person to be nominated as coadjutor, the bishop suggests a certain Discalced Carmelite known to Ingoli, though he is not named in the letter. In a different letter, he defers decision to the French agent in Rome, Mr. Gueffier. In the last letter, in response to hints from members of the royal council and the nuncio who, prompted by Ingoli and PF in general, suggested that a secular priest (as opposed to a member of a religious order) would be better as coadjutor or suffragan, the bishop shows readiness to accept that solution but asks PF to come up with a candidate, as he himself does not know many seculars.
Additional comments
The letters are dated between April and July 1646.

An account of the resource
Letter from the nuncio to France, Nicolò Guidi di Bagno, regarding the situation in Persia and the bishopric of Babylon. Christophe Authier has been suggested (it is not clear by whom) as possible bishop of Aspaham and coadjutor of Babylon, seeing as the current bishop of Babylon is planning on renouncing the see. Authier is not in Paris at the moment but the bishop of Babylon (Fra Bernardo) told the nuncio that he doubted Authier would accept the post, because: a) he did not seem inclined to live in that part of the world; and b) he would not be able to stay there on such a small allowance (i.e., 100 scudi/year from the bishop himself, and 100 scudi from PF). The nuncio is trying to secure a bishopric in Provence for Fra Bernardo (Jean Duval); if the queen agrees, then the bishop would be able to leave the entire income of the Babylon see in the hands of whoever will go to replace him, [thus making the post more appealing]. The nuncio will keep Cardinal Capponi updated on the matter and will let him know what Authier said, after he finally sees him.

Letter from the nuncio to France, Nicolò Guidi di Bagno, regarding the bishopric of Babylon and his own conversation with Authier on the matter. Authier said that he unfortunately could not go to Babylon, but that he and "Father Vincent" (Vincent de Paul) will look for a good candidate, either from Avignon or from France. The nuncio also mentions in this letter that the queen of France and Cardinal Mazzarin have decided to assign 400 scudi/year to the current bishop of Babylon, in order to make it easier for him to renounce the bishopric income.

Description
An account of the resource
Minutes of PF general meeting discussing, among other issues, the letter from the nuncio to France mentioning the French queen's offer to provide 400 scudi/year to the bishop of Babylon in case he leaves the bishopric of Babylon in the hands of the pope and allows the nuncio to nominate a different candidate for the bishop position (with the approval of the queen). PF decided to wait for the nomination but advised caution towards allowing the queen too much influence on the matter, lest the French crown gradually begin to claim the right to nominate all bishops of Babylon in the future.

Description
An account of the resource
Letter from the nuncio to France, Nicolò Guidi di Bagno, letting PF know that the bishop of Babylon liked the idea suggested by PF to first find a coadjutor, and only then renounce the bishopric. Vincent de Paul said that since the first nominee was not approved, he could suggest another candidate, an able and virtuous person who would be ideal for the post, because he wished to settle in Persia and was forty years old, and had been a disciple of Mr. Spondani. Vincent de Paul did not give any name to the nuncio because the said priest first wanted to know if the pope and PF would be satisfied with his credentials. Vincent de Paul added that the crown did not have any claims on making the nomination; her majesty the queen only needed to know the name of the nominated person, the only condition (also specified in the act of foundation of the bishopric) being that he be French, especially since her majesty would have to support the incumbent bishop of Babylon with the promised 400 scudi/year. The nuncio believes that the bishop would honour whatever arrangement will be made with him, considering that he is very different from Mr. Gueffier (alludes to issues of overdue cardinal ring fees mentioned further in the letter). Other unrelated matters at the end of the letter (regarding the vicarate of Athens).
Date received 1646-08-25
Date discussed 1646-09-11
Additional comments
Letter probably directed to Secretary Ingoli, because the issue of the vicarate of Athens usually shows up in the nuncio's letters that were explicitly addressed to Ingoli.

Description
An account of the resource
Letter from the nuncio to France, Nicolò Guidi di Bagno, to Secretary Ingoli on various matters, mentioning Vincent de Paul twice. Firstly in relation to an internal dispute of the Capuchins (which had been going on for years), namely a conflict between Father Archangelo (missionary) and the Paris provincial, which the Royal Council of Conscience has decided to resolve (temporarily) by deferring everything to the provincial, a decision greatly favored by the Prince of Condé. According to Vincent de Paul, it would be hard to change that decision, because everybody was in its favor. Secondly, regarding the bishopric of Babylon, the nuncio is constantly trying to get a definite answer from Mr. (Hippolyte) Féret, who had also been nominated by the bishop of Paris, as priest of the parish of Saint Nicolas of Sciatra. The nuncio does not know if he is going to accept or not. If he says no, then perhaps another suitable person among Vincent de Paul's missionaries can be found.

Féret will shortly come to Paris (around St. Martin's day) for the final resolution; the nuncio hopes the matter will be resolved quickly, because he knows that Ingoli would like it settled as soon as possible.

Letter from the nuncio to France, Nicolò Guidi di Bagno, to PF mentioning, among other things, that the bishop of Babylon went to Catalonia to exercise episcopal functions, on account of the lack of bishops in that province. The nuncio says that he does not know on what authority the bishop can do that, and that he was not told anything about the matter; as on the one hand because of the bishop's absence, and on the other, because "Father Vincent" (Vincent de Paul) still has not nominated anybody for the coadjutor post, not even somebody from among his missionaries, even though he (the nuncio) has reminded him to do so several times already.

Description
An account of the resource
The nuncio to France, Nicolò Guidi di Bagno, writes about a conversation with Cardinal Mazzarin in Amiens, during which they talked about the issue of the coadjutor to the bishop of Babylon (as well as the bishop's trip to Catalonia). Mazzarin said that the king put aside 400 scudi expressly for the trip of the nominee to Persia, and that he had given express orders to "Father Vincent" (Vincent de Paul) to nominate somebody. The nuncio reminds Ingoli that he also talked to Vincent de Paul several times about the matter, but that he does not have much hope judging by the coldness with which Vincent de Paul treated the matter, and also the delay of one year so far; but the nuncio will continue to remind and entreat Vincent de Paul to resolve the matter.

Description
An account of the resource
Letter from the nuncio to France, Nicolò Guidi di Bagno, about the coadjutor position in Babylon. "Father Vincent" (Vincent de Paul) has proposed Mr. Blampignon, a priest from the diocese of Nevers, as a virtuous and pious candidate. Moreover, he has already learned how to read in Persian with the help of a Persian Catholic at court (called David). Blampignon claims to want to establish himself in Persia, and David wants to come along, which would be a good thing, because David is a good Catholic and has translated the catechism and other useful books into the Persian language. The nuncio again requests details about the funding of the trip to Persia and the route to be taken (via Rome, or Marseille?).

Description
An account of the resource
Letter written by a Discalced Carmelite [possibly Pierre de Piviers] to PF about the situation in Madagascar. The letter notes that he has heard from merchants of the Compagnie, that secular missionaries have been sent to Madagascar the previous year, and that they do not want Discalced Carmelites to be on the island; they fear this might cause problems, as there is already concern that the people might loose their esteem for the secular priests, and that conflict might arise. Its also noted that people are not very happy with the arrival of the French. The letter also talks about the bishopric of Babylonia and Isfahan. The bishop (Father Bernard) said that he could not reside in his bishopric because he is ill, however he wants to help the mission by apppointing someone of his congregation as his successor; the bishop states he will support him and other missionaries financially and with faculties. The letter is not signed or dated.
Additional comments
There is no signature and no date, but, based on the content, it may be inferred that the letter was probably written by a Discalced Carmelite in 1649, possibly Pierre de Piviers.
