Letter from PF to Giovanni Francesco Guidi di Bagno, 1627-05-28, Rome

Subject

Cardinal rings

Description

Summary
Letter from PF to the nuncio to France letting him know about the response of the archbishop of Paris to Cardinal Bentivoglio (attached on a separate paper and filed not in this volume, but in the SOCG collection) regarding the cardinal ring fee issue. The PF, in the presence of the pope, decided to write the following to the nuncio: 1) that the archbishop's argument that the late cardinal of Retz was not supposed to pay the cardinal ring fee is not valid, because Cardinals Gusman of Spain and Richelieu of France paid it even though they had not received the capello (the cardinal hat); 2) the nuncio should try to see if the ring fee could be obtained from the owners of the late cardinal of Retz's property, since the archbishop and the other relatives are excusing themselves by saying that they are not his heirs. Maybe in this manner they would decide to pay it.
